“I grew up in another faith, but when I came to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it felt different. It did not feel like religion I had known before. It felt like a relationship. Like I was really walking with God.
“I have been through things. I lost my baby girl after Katrina. That pain almost broke me, but God does not put anything on us we cannot handle. She is with Him. I know she watches over us.
“What I love here is hope. I learned God still gives grace, still gives us chances to change and come back to Him. That feels like love.
“I teach the little kids now. It pushed me out of my comfort zone. I used to stay quiet, but now I feel myself growing and loving more. God has been so good to us.
“Life did not get easy after baptism. But if I stay in His word like a GPS, I will not get lost. I try to stay on the covenant path even when it is hard.
“When I look back, I see all the times I could have been gone, but God kept me. He sent people to guide me. And now my kids wake up excited for church. That is everything.
“I am grateful. I feel His Spirit here. I am staying with God.” — Roynisha

On Valentine’s Day, people the world over celebrate love. But what does the word “love” really mean? Is it about flowers, chocolate, and gifts? Certainly, at times, it can be. But the second great commandment teaches of a different kind of love—that of actively loving our neighbor.
Giving help to others—making a conscientious effort to care about others as much as or more than we care about ourselves—is our joy. Especially, I might add, when it is not convenient and when it takes us out of our comfort zone. Living that second great commandment is the key to becoming a true disciple of Jesus Christ.
Of course, we must remember that the second great commandment follows an even greater commandment—which is the commandment to first love God.
We often see people in the world today ignore the first commandment. And yet, when we obey the first commandment, we are much better equipped to keep the second commandment.
It has been my privilege to witness the impact of many humanitarian efforts around the world made by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Today, may we use this holiday dedicated to love as a reminder to recommit to loving our neighbor—whether they live in the house next door or across the globe.

"With great joy I humbly testify our Heavenly Father loves us, Jesus is the Christ, Joseph Smith restored the fulness of the everlasting gospel, and the Book of Mormon testifies of these truths. We are led by a living prophet today.” —M. Russell Ballard (1928-2023)
