The state is not competent to adjudicate and judge the doctrinal questions and discipline of the church institute. It is granted no authority to excommunicate in scripture. The church is a government with its own officers, law-order and structure and Christ is its head. It is a distinct sphere of authority with its own jurisdiction. If you think the state can weigh in and dictate to the church (even if in the grip of sin like the Corinthian church) then you can raise no objection to what the state did to the churches during the Covid era lockdowns. If you want state control of the church, then go to Rome and Vatican City where they are one. The states task is to be a ministry of justice over the public legal order, appropriately applying the civil aspects of the law of God, not ruling over the non-civil private law of the church. If a church is unfaithful or teaching falsehood and apostate, then it is Christ himself as head of his church who will remove its lamp stand (Rev. 2:1-5), just as he rules and stands in judgment over the rebellious and apostate state. A faithless church sows the seeds of its own destruction and is answerable to God. If this reality is not grasped disaster awaits.
