@DaveRuden Any hint on whether the DPH will extend the mask mandate for youth and amateur sports past Dec 22? Will winter @ciacsports still be allowed to go maskless starting Dec 23? There was no information on that at the governor’s presser yesterday.

@HockeyCoachDan1 Thx for bringing this up. We lost 32 USAH CT refs to quarantine this week. Num of active refs is down ~70% vs last year. DPH quarantine requirements for refs are RIDICULOUS. We find out around Thurs which refs have to quarantine. No time to react when schedules are already full.

The CT USA Hockey officiating staff is being decimated by COVID quarantine requirements (not cases). If there are any MA, RI, or NY officials interested in helping out this weekend reach out to me and I can put you in contact with some schedulers. We have games 10U through 18U.

@cthockeyrefs I’m dating myself with this comment; we worked a pro-am league in this rink many moons ago with the centerline offside pass and touch icing rules in effect. Linesman REALLY had be on their toes because things happened so fast in this barn.

Don’t forget the USA Hockey signals. The delayed offside is one arm up and that’s it. The other arm doesn’t point out. Yeah, that signal makes sense in a 2-official system, but it’s not what USAH wants. Don’t let creative signaling keep you from tournaments or camp selection.

Players, coaches, and spectators need to be aware of the unintended consequence of going to eWhistles - the dreaded “quick whistle”. The time it takes to press a button is less than the time to raise a whistle to the mouth and blow. #thinkbeforeyouscream

Catching some AM games on this #firstweekendback. Saw the 2-puck system in use. This is acceptable for USA Hockey games in CT as it saves time and eliminates handoffs. Details in later tweets. Possible downside is a warmer, bouncier pocket puck. Be aware of this at higher levels.

2-puck system: 1 puck in play and 1 puck in a ref’s pocket. At stoppage, if in-play puck is closest to FO location then it is fetched and dropped. If pocket puck is closest then it is the FO puck. May save time (think icings and dump-in offsides) depending on who has pocket puck.

@stevepicano @The_Ref43 Clarification out of the CT Dept of Economic & Community Development looks like it will allow training sessions with no more than 4 people on the ice at a time. Lots of interpretive debate still happening though.

CT officials - This being the last weekend of USA Hockey games in CT in 2020, players may get squirrelly thinking that game misconducts won’t count. Penalize appropriately. Judicious use of a misconduct late in a game can remove a problem player before they create big problems.

@stevepicano @The_Ref43 The CT governor said “no activities” for non-pro and non-collegiate programs until Jan 19. In his briefing yesterday he cited activities not related to actual game play as contributors.
