In the morning of Friday September 29, a group of 34 people, men, women and children, was closing in on the south shores of Lesvos south.
Only a few kilometers from land a RIB with three men onboard approached, first observing from a distance, but after removing the Greek flag on the boat, moved in.
Seeing them only a few feet away, they could clearly see their faces, two men in uniform, one in civilian clothes. Non of them tried to hide their faces, nor that they were members of the Hellenic Cost Guard, both uniformed men had the insignia of the Greek coast guard on their dark blue t-shirts.
It was clear that the bald man in civilian clothing was in charge, he started asking questions, nationalities, how many onboard etc. When he had gotten the information he wanted, he went to the wheelhouse and talked to someone over a radio.
The crew of the RIB removed the petrol from the boat, and tied a towline to the rubber boat. The man in charge told them they were safe, and because their boat wasn’t safe, they needed to tow them to a bigger ship, so they could be transported safely to land.
The group of 34 people were towed to a Greek coast guard vessel, off the shore of Lesvos south. When everyone was onboard, the crew, all wearing black face masks, stripped them of all their belongings, bags, phones and papers, all done at gunpoint. Everyone was in shock, they believed they vere finally safe, only to find out that they were in the mouth of a shark.
The coast guard vessel headed out to sea towards Turkish waters, 34 people, men, women and children, was illegal forced back towards the place they were fleeing from.
After the coast guard vessel stopped, the crew inflated two black and orange life rafts behind the vessel. The orange cover with the logo “Lalizas” printed on it was torn off, only the black skeleton of the life raft remained, moving slowly with the waves.
The group was divided into two groups, then forced into the life rafts. The coast guard moved quickly away, but first they made a huge wave, sending the two life rafts towards Turkey.
After noon the the Turkish coast guard received an email from their Greek counterpart, telling them that two life rafts carrying 34 people was drifting inside Turkish waters of the coast of Dikili, exact location on their whereabouts was provided.
At 14.05 Turkish coast guard found two life rafts carrying 34 people drifting outside Dikili, Turkey, all 34 were taken back to Turkey and arrested, also the children.
This was all done in brought daylight in an area heavily monitored by Frontex, strangely enough, nobody saw anything, no report was filed, all reported to be normal. And in many aspects it’s actually exactly what it is, normal, because this has now been going on for over three years, night and day, everyone knows that these atrocities are taking place, but nobody is doing anything to stop it.
The officer on the RIB that stopped them just before they hit shore on Lesvos, has feathers that should be easily recognizable, especially when you just have to look into the ranks of the Hellenic Coast Guard on Lesvos.
This man is most likely someone’s husband, father, son, uncle, cousin, friend or neighbor. I wonder what they feel when they know what crimes this man has committed, what he is capable of.
This isn’t a coast guard officer, it’s just a criminal with a badge, he and so many other officers in the Greek coast guard should be put behind bars where they belong. To hide behind “just following orders” won’t save them, because they know that these orders are illegal, in direct violation of the law of the sea, international law and human rights law.
At some point, sooner or later, everyone will face judgment for their crimes, let’s hope, for the sake of humanity, that for these criminals it’s sooner than later.
