Dancehall star @masickamusic took a major step in his international career on Saturday, August 15, with his first US arena headline show at the @barclayscenter in Brooklyn, New York.
Billed Masicka Live at Barclays, the concert saw the Jamaican entertainer take centre stage for a milestone he has described as a long time coming, performing before fans in one of New York City’s major entertainment venues.
The show comes during another significant chapter for Masicka, following the release of his third studio album, Forever Reign, his debut project under Def Jam Recordings.

and supported ....
the CHALLENGE for Dancehall (and also Reggae) is for the TOP artists to go out there, and raise the bar
IMPROVE at your craft
MOST (if not all) our top young stars have pretty much nailed it in terms of studio performances
NOW it's time to get better on stage
1 - Start by all agreeing to get rid of the "Dash-Weh-Dat Next-Track" syndrome. It's NOT our culture. Yellowman, Shabba, Buju, Beenie are considered KINGS partly because they didn't do this.
Kartel's performance at Reggaeland was good to see. Singing every chune. Not feeling like he has to fit in 122 songs into 58 minutes.
2 - Hire and STICK TO your own band. PAY THEM properly - which includes the time they spend i n rehersals. They have families and/or plans to have one. Stop acting like they are nothing without you.
3 - Write and create songs that appeal to more than the people hanging out at the top of your street. This shouldn't need further explanation, but......
4- Take younger AND OLDER acts on your tours. Give the people their monies worth. Give the promoters a better package. Make this long over due momentum last for a lot longer than people think it will.
True story :
In 1998, we promoted a show in Boston at the main venue for dancehall in our hood .... the show was starring a new artist who had only 3 hits and may be another 3 non-hits at the time .... his first time performing a series of shows in the US I think. His performance was only about 15 minutes. Not even.
He didn't know how to perform. Ran outta breath. Was singing in a higher octave - partly due to lack of proper monitors. In between songs, he didn't know how to interact with the fans. A few people even boo'd him for that.
18 months later, he had more releases and a good 9-10 big hits. This time he was an opener (WITH A BAND) on a series of shows with the great LADY SAW. Every night he was watching SAW do her thing. Learning.
More hits, and since his last visit he had performed in every market. All of that SHOWED. He went up there full of confidence. Gave them a 30 minute performance. Nailed every song. Interacted with the audience. Gave us freestyle moments that were never repeated. Made it all special and the crowd showed him the love back.
Aftewards, backstage, you could see his excitement. He remembered being in the same venue, much smaller crowd and hearing those few people's boos. I told him if he keeps this up, he is gonna be going to the very top and beyond. Because the music he kept making had an appeal beyond the hardcore audience. And they were each becoming hits.
Fast forward 18 years later. Same city. Another venue. 3 times larger. He was the only artist on the bill. The place was sold out. West Indians, Africans, Asian, Caucasians, citizens, resident aliens, illegals .. LOL ... the variety was unique to see. They all knew every song he performed. He was there over an hour. Had pro dancers on stage for some segments of his show properly choerographed etc. Supestar level performance. His recordings had created global hits. His stage shows had created a loyal global fan base.
His name is SEAN PAUL @duttypaul
And as I wrote after the BAD BUNNY performance at the SuperBowl ..... it's time for him to be up there giving the world the big hits they all love during the halftime in 2027 as he celebrates his 30 years in the business.
