It's simply false to claim there are no good counterarguments, people like David Krueger just won't engage with them.

The counterarguments are clean and simple. There very clearly is no hardware overhang; the systems we have now use every bit of hardware we have available and still we hunger for more capability but can't get it. Fast takeoff is essentially impossible. Existing systems more or less do what they're asked to do all the time, which is very different from the prediction the Doomer crowd used to make. Machine learning itself makes the notion of complicated deceptive behaviors somewhere between "extremely unlikely" and "ridiculous". Existing systems have no internal goals, never mind arbitrary and capricious ones. I could go on.

Now, the Doomers can lie to themselves and claim there are no good counterarguments, but as an intelligent skeptic, you should ask them to explain why they refuse to discuss the actual arguments their opponents make and not the strawmen they imagine.
