Let me tell you what happened to Geregu Power shares when Otedola sold his 77% stake for $750 million.

Nothing. The price did not move one kobo.

Because he sold the entire block off-market to a single buyer, MA’AM Energy Limited, linked to former Governor Abdulaziz Yari. No flood of sell orders hit the exchange and it had no retail panic therefore no crash. The NGX saw nothing unusual that day.

He took Geregu from a ₦250 billion listing in 2022 to nearly ₦2.9 trillion at peak, then exited completely, stepped off the board, and redeployed $750 million into Dangote Refinery and First HoldCo.

We shouldn’t call this a divestment but a masterclass. Most Nigerian investors do not even know how to exit a ₦500,000 position without moving the market against themselves. Otedola just moved $750 million and left no fingerprints.

People call Dangote the richest Nigerian. But Otedola might be the most dangerous capital allocator on the continent. There is a difference.
