Something I find weirdly fascinating about this entire saga is the roundabout way that people are now trying to figure out what this character’s actual name is. An entire community birthed her; now everybody’s standing around the basinet, debating about what to put on the certificate.
Some still call her Draco, or Malfoy. Lots of non-English posters are calling her “feminized Malfoy” (I expect Twitter’s translator is to blame for that). One popular choice appears to be some feminized version of Draco, such as Dracina or Dracaena; I personally find that last one a tad awkward, but that’s just me. Some have suggested Lyra (apparently because the Draco and Lyra constellations are next door neighbors, I think?). I’m told that some version of this character is years old—we can thank the Koreans for that—so it may still take time for a name to be settled on.
Whatever happens, if one vote makes any difference, the Malfoid moniker absolutely has to remain. The people who hate this character or are now trying to usurp control of her also hate the “foid” part of her name, like spotting a Crucifix at a trans-rights rally. They hate the connotation behind it, just like they hate the spontaneous way she became so popular so fast.
They won’t give up trying to twist or corrupt what happened, either—Harry Potter was theirs, it belonged to them, and only they can have the final word over what will or won’t be included in it. Why, a genderbent Draco is obviously transsexual in the first place, can’t you see that?! They already won! Go crawl back under your rocks and cope, or something.
Names are hard. Call her whatever you want for now—eventually, something will gel and everyone will roll with it.
Just don’t forget that before she was anything else, she was Malfoid.
