I’m not gonna lie… if this was the 1700s, this would’ve been playing on the carriage ride to convince Rapunzel to leave the castle. 😭🏰
The Odyssey memes, aura, gifs, entire social media reaction, is what movies are supposed to do.
We weren’t built to binge and move on. We want to devour a movie. Argue about it. Rewatch it.
I’m here for all of it.
Nolan literally looked at the current world and decided to make a movie about the importance of being kind to strangers and guest, even when the entire world is in chaos. That wasn’t a movie about getting home, that was a movie about humanity being found at our darkest moments.
Read this before you watch The Odyssey:
- Agamemnon was the most powerful king in Greece.
- His brother, Menelaus, was the king of Sparta.
- Menelaus was married to Helen, whose beauty was legendary across the ancient world.
- In the city of Troy lived Prince Paris and his brother Hector, Troy's greatest warrior.
- Paris met Helen and the two left Sparta together for Troy.
- Menelaus saw this as a grave insult and asked the Greek kings to help him bring Helen back.
- Agamemnon united the Greek kingdoms and launched a massive invasion of Troy.
- This conflict became known as the Trojan War.
- Many legendary heroes fought in the war, including Achilles, the greatest Greek warrior, and Odysseus, the clever king of Ithaca.
- While Achilles was famous for his strength, Odysseus was famous for his intelligence and strategy.
- The war lasted 10 years and neither side could win.
- Finally, Odysseus came up with a brilliant plan: the Trojan Horse.
- The Greeks hid soldiers inside a giant wooden horse and pretended to sail away.
- The Trojans brought the horse into their city, believing it was a gift.
- That night, the hidden Greek soldiers opened the gates of Troy, and the Greeks captured the city.
- The Trojan War was over.
- After that, Odysseus begins his long journey home.
- That journey filled with gods, monsters, shipwrecks, temptation, and loss is called The Odyssey.
- And that's what the film is about.
99 PERCENT OF THE WORLD WILL NEVER SEE THE REAL VERSION OF THIS MOVIE
Nolan just shot the first film in history entirely on IMAX 70mm, a format so demanding almost no cinema can run it.
- Only 25 theaters in the US, and fewer than 40 worldwide, can show the true 70mm print
- The real aspect ratio is nearly square, 1.43:1, unlike anything in a normal theater
- Budget was 250 million dollars, shot by longtime Nolan collaborator Hoyte van Hoytema
- Every other screen on earth shows a cropped digital version instead
If you are not near one of those 40 theaters, you are watching a different movie.
Never forget that his Dad graduated from MIT and his Mom from Harvard. He would probably be curing cancer if he wasn’t so good at hitting baseballs far
