In 2021, Polish javelin thrower Maria Andrejczyk, a cancer survivor and Tokyo Olympic silver medalist, auctioned her medal to raise funds for life-saving heart surgery for eight-month-old Miłoszek Małysa.

The medal sold for approximately $125,000, covering the remaining cost of the child’s treatment in the United States.

Then came an extraordinary turn of events.

The winning bidder, the Polish supermarket chain Żabka, paid the full amount and immediately returned the medal to Maria, stating that she deserved to keep the symbol of everything she had achieved.

Maria later explained her willingness to part with it: “A medal is only an object, but it can save lives instead of collecting dust in a closet.”

In that moment she transformed a personal symbol of victory into something far more meaningful, a second chance at life for a young child.

A 13-year-old boy in Utah has just spent his ENTIRE SUMMER building a custom wheelchair for a 21-month-old baby girl he's never met.

His name is Zac Waters.

He watched a YouTube channel about 3D printing and decided he wanted to do something with it.

So he found MakeGood, a nonprofit that 3D prints assistive devices for people with disabilities, and got to work.

He spent over 300 HOURS, designing, printing, testing. and assembling.

...but he didn't just build a chair, he custom-designed it specifically for her

He custom printed pink accents, because pink is her favorite color.

He built her a removable cupholder and tray table. He designed a space in the back for heavier medical equipment.

He gave her soft, bendable straps so they don't dig into her, he even designed an adjustable footrest and headrest so it grows with her as she does.

When they asked him why he did it, he said it combines his two favorite things in life: 3D printing and helping people in need.

He's THIRTEEN YEARS OLD.

The Cherokee Nation has become the first Native American tribe in the United States to preserve its ancestral seeds in the Arctic.

Nestled deep within a mountain on the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, approximately 810 miles (1,300 kilometers) from the North Pole, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault functions as the planet’s foremost safeguard for agricultural heritage. Constructed to shield crops against warfare, natural disasters, diseases, and the impacts of climate change, the facility maintains duplicate seed samples contributed by nearly every country around the globe.

In 2020, the Cherokee Nation earned the distinction of being the first U.S. based Native American tribe invited to deposit its traditional heirloom seeds into the vault. The tribe placed nine culturally significant crop varieties inside, including Cherokee White Eagle Corn, regarded as its most sacred variety, along with Cherokee Trail of Tears Beans, Cherokee Long Greasy Beans, Cherokee Turkey Gizzard Beans, and Cherokee Candy Roaster Squash.

These seeds represent far more than planting material. They embody generations of agricultural wisdom, cultural heritage, and historical continuity handed down through Cherokee families.

The invitation followed the Cherokee Nation’s 2019 discussion of its heirloom seed preservation efforts with NPR. The tribe maintains its own seed bank, which distributes traditional varieties to Cherokee citizens. This initiative helps protect crop diversity that might otherwise be lost while strengthening connections between families and their agricultural roots.

Inspired by these efforts, the Global Crop Diversity Trust extended the invitation for the Cherokee Nation to deposit backup copies of its seeds in Svalbard for long term security.

The vault is excavated roughly 400 feet (120 meters) into solid bedrock, where consistently low temperatures supplemented by refrigeration systems preserve seeds for decades or even centuries. It currently houses nearly one million seed samples and possesses capacity for approximately 4.5 million distinct crop varieties.

Crucially, the Cherokee Nation maintains full ownership of its deposited seeds. The vault operates much like a secure safety deposit box. Only the tribe can request retrieval of its materials should the need ever arise.

Morgan Freeman is turning his entire 124-acre ranch in Mississippi into sanctuary for bees.

Alarmed by collapsing bee populations, Freeman decided to act back in 2014. He imported 26 beehives from Arkansas to his ranch in Mississippi and planted fields of clover, lavender, and magnolia – creating a pollinator paradise across the entire property.

What began as a personal hobby quickly became a full-scale conservation effort. Bees pollinate about 80% of the world’s flowering crops – including many fruits, nuts, and vegetables. One healthy colony can pollinate up to 300 million flowers in a single day. Without bees, ecosystems collapse. Food systems follow.
