What if you could step into the places where historyโs greatest thinkers lived, reasoned, and transformed the world? For Bill Rein, The Great Connections program did just that.
From reading Aristotle at Aristotleโs Lagoon to exploring Platoโs Academy in Greece, Bill experienced the ideas of these great minds not as distant relics but as living, practical lessons. The program goes beyond textbooksโitโs about learning in context and connecting timeless ideas to real-world action.
The result? A deeper understanding of philosophy, history, and how to apply these principles to make the world a better place.

Each year at the Great Connections Summer Seminar, students ages 16-24 hail from places such as Argentina, Guatemala, Ecuador, and all directions of the U.S. One participant came because her sister loved it so much she returned three times! โค๏ธ
At the end of the week, students testified that the program had not only significantly enriched their ability to think well and their knowledge, but also their understanding of what is going on in the world. And it had also buoyed their spirits!ย
They were especially impacted by their ability to speak their minds without fear of criticism, shunning, or reprisal.ย
They became great friends and allies in the quest for successful lives, grasping the great connections between reason and love. ๐ค

At Reliance Collegeโs Great Connections, learning extends far beyond the classroom. Students from across the globe come together, many exploring a new city for the first time.
At our annual Summer Seminar in Chicago, this means diving into the cityโs rich history with scavenger hunts, discovering landmarks, and of course, enjoying iconic deep-dish pizza.
Whether exploring the Great Fireโs legacy or immersing yourself in local culture abroad, the program combines intellectual growth with unforgettable real-world experiences.
In 2008, an unknown figure named Satoshi Nakamoto released a nine-page white paper that introduced Bitcoin - a peer-to-peer digital cash system. It wasnโt just a payment tool; it was the blueprint for a decentralized monetary network that could operate without banks or governments.
Bitcoin has since sparked a global movement, created a trillion-dollar industry, and challenged the foundations of modern finance. But what kind of mind could imagine such a thing?
At Reliance College, we believe the answer points to the liberal arts at their best: not abstract theory, but a framework for understanding - and changing - the world.
Satoshiโs design wasnโt born of one specialty. It required:
๐ Cryptography to secure transactions
๐ Computer science to coordinate a decentralized network
๐ Economics to understand money and inflation
๐ Game theory to align incentives without coercion
๐ Political philosophy to imagine money beyond state control
๐ Mathematics to model risk and probability
๐ Software engineering to make it all run in the real world
Bitcoin, in other words, is a liberal-arts achievement disguised as code.
At Reliance, we train students the same way: to grasp complex systems, ask fundamental questions, and connect ideas across domains.
Read Plato or Hayek, and youโre learning about justice, value, and order.
Study mathematics, and you sharpen the rigor Satoshi used. Engage in collaborative problem-solving, and you practice the reasoning his protocol encoded.
Satoshi didnโt just write code - he made a moral statement about trust and human coordination. He was a systems thinker. Thatโs exactly what a true liberal-arts education produces.
Whether or not you become the next Nakamoto, youโll live in a world shaped by people like him. To understand it - or reshape it - you need more than technical training. You need the intellectual range of the liberal arts.
Thatโs what we offer at Reliance College.
Because the world doesnโt need more rule-followers.
It needs more builders.
In The Great Connections Seminars, weย use specialized methods which strengthen reasoning skills and independent judgment.
These include a focus on the objective basis of knowledge in every field, physics to poetry, as well as the relation between abstract ideas and real-world consequences.
We combine these methods with content from world-changing classic texts, modern science and economics, and a special emphasis on reasoning, logic, psychological self-awareness, and practical skills, for a content-rich program.
Students learn to think for themselves as well as implement ideas in the world.

For Reese Pifer, a student at Haywood Early College in Clyde, NC, one of the most striking aspects of the Great Connections Seminar was the variety of texts and subjects explored.
Each reading opened new avenues for discussion, often connecting abstract ideas back to everyday life. โWhen people gave differing opinions, we were able to discuss and understand instead of arguing,โ Reese said. That openness made the conversations especially rewarding.
Reese valued the chance to meet people from different ages and backgrounds, describing it as eye-opening to see both common ground and differences in perspective. She also appreciated learning how to decipher the deeper meaning behind texts โ something she found particularly relevant in an age when the news can be intentionally confusing.
Among the readings, Maria Montessoriโs writings stood out, as Reese had long been curious about alternatives to public education. She found it valuable both personally and professionally, since she enjoys working with children. She loved Schillerโs ๐๐ฏ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ด๐ฆ ๐ฐ๐ง ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ฉ๐ฐ๐ณ๐ถ๐ด ๐ช๐ฏ ๐๐ณ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฌ ๐๐ณ๐ข๐จ๐ฆ๐ฅ๐บ for its connection to her own interests, and she found the poetry discussion especially engaging.
Outside the classroom, the improv show and time spent exploring Chicago provided some of her favorite memories.
The entire experience helped Reese gain a stronger baseline understanding of challenging texts, pushing her to think more deeply. Looking back, she came away grateful for the chance to sharpen her thinking, connect with others, and experience both intellectual and personal growth.
โTechnology alone is not enough.โ - Steve Jobs
Jobs once said itโs โtechnology married with the liberal arts, married with the humanities, that yields the results that make our hearts sing.โ
Thatโs not just a poetic aside - itโs a blueprint for the future.
Jobs understood what many forget: the most powerful innovations donโt come from coding skills alone. They come from people who understand beauty, human nature, ethics, and meaning - and know how to build. Thatโs how Apple created products that werenโt just functional, but intuitive, elegant, even emotional.
As a student, Steve Jobs dropped out of Reed College. But he didnโt stop learning. He kept auditing classes, including a course on calligraphy that - years later - inspired the Macโs beautiful fonts and typography.
โIf I had never dropped in on that single calligraphy course,โ he said, โthe Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts.โ
At Reliance College, we believe a marriage of disciplines is essential - not just to design better technology, but to live better lives.
Our curriculum is rooted in the Great Books, where students engage with timeless ideas - from Aristotle and Shakespeare to Darwin and de Tocqueville - while building real-world skills through projects, discussion, and entrepreneurship. Itโs a place where philosophy meets product design, and logic meets leadership.
Jobs talked about architecture not just in silicon, but in the organization - and at Reliance, weโre building an educational architecture designed to foster creativity, autonomy, and intellectual rigor across fields.
The world doesnโt need more passive specialists. It needs active creators with depth and perspective.
Thatโs why weโre reclaiming the liberal arts - not as nostalgia, but as a launchpad for 21st-century innovation.
At the Great Connections Seminar, participants move beyond abstract debates to truly engage with timeless ideas and apply them to their lives. ๐
For one alum, Bill Rein, this meant transforming his approach to learning and actionโstarting a club in college, becoming an activist, and ultimately building a meaningful career in DC advocating for the principles he values. ๐๏ธ
The seminar fosters intellectual growth, practical application, and a community that inspires real-world impact. โจ
