Tonight at the #NKKLK event, more than seeing my sister PLV, I have witnessed why we need to fight. ‘Offense’ is one thing, but its entirely another to be put to jail for your art. I have seen my community and how Drag — beyond the reality TV and entertainment, is a PROTEST. Now more than ever, it meant something bigger. Drag Artists are not just dolls or clowns in a pretty dress. We are an expression borne out of the systemic oppression of the members of the LGBTQ+. We bend gender because too many a time, our gender has been used to abuse and discriminate. We have our own interpretations of ‘faith’ because God’s love has been weaponized to inflict more hate and suffering. Pura Luka Vega, was a living testimony of that. If we can enjoy Queens lipsyncing against each other, can you really watch comfortably knowing anyone of them can go to jail for ‘crossing a line’? While ironically, a policeman can point a gun to a civilian in a road rage and walk freely? PH still reeks of bigotry and discrimination. But tonight, I saw a community embracing and comforting each other. A group of souls filled with passion and kindness. A congregation founded in love. It is such a shame a lot of people won’t see past their bigotry and judgement. Thank you to all the organizers, the artists, the attendees and everyone. It was truly a silver lining. In the words of Mrs. Tan, ‘ang sining ay dapat maging malaya at mapagpalaya.’ Drag is NOT a crime. #AcquitPuraLukaVega
