On this day in 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law.

That landmark law outlawed discriminatory voting practices that had denied millions of Americans the fundamental right to vote and gave the federal government stronger tools to protect that right.

But 61 years later, the Supreme Court, President Trump, and congressional Republicans are all working to roll back those protections.

The Supreme Court is slowly gutting the Voting Rights Act, one section at a time.

And President Trump and Republicans are pushing the SAVE Act, which would make it harder for eligible American citizens to register to vote and cast their ballots.

My Democratic colleagues and I, like most Americans, believe we should be making it easier for eligible Americans to register and securely cast their ballots, not harder.

The John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act would do just that. Let’s pass it into law.

Today, that legacy is being tested. From the weakening of key protections in the Voting Rights Act to ongoing efforts to restrict ballot access, dilute Black voting power, and undermine fair representation, the right to vote remains under assault.

The Congressional Black Caucus remains steadfast in protecting this fundamental right because democracy is strongest when every voice is heard and every vote counts.

As Republican Senators prepare to confirm Trump’s former personal lawyer, Todd Blanche, as Attorney General, New Mexico is suing him for allegedly blocking its investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes at his New Mexico estate.

Blanche also led the White House’s strategy to contain the Epstein files.
