On Sunday, July 12th, at 7pm, republicans from Longford, Westmeath, Roscommon and Cavan assembled at the Martin Hurson Memorial at the entrance to Mostrim train station to mark the 45th anniversary of young Martin's death on hunger strike on the 13th of July 1981.
Paddy Dolan chaired the event. The 1981 Hunger Strike Roll of Honour was read out by Brenda Kenny, the County Longford Roll of Honour by Tracey Tully, and Kieran Lennon read the County Westmeath Roll of Honour. Shay Kiernan read the 1916 Proclamation.
Wreaths were laid on behalf of the Martin Hurson Memorial Committee and Sinn Féin Poblachtach Longford-Westmeath by Stephen Fullham, by Shay Kiernan on behalf of the Casey-McCreesh Cumann, and by Kieran Lennon on behalf of the Seán Costello-Martin Hurson Cumann. The flag was dipped to the playing of the Last Post.
Uachtarán Seosamh Ó Maoileoin stood in and gave the oration, as the original speaker was unable to attend. He spoke about the great sacrifice of Martin and his comrades, and how the news of Martin's death was such a shock to him and his comrades who were incarcerated in Portlaoise Gaol at the time. Finishing his oration, he called for more support to be given to the republican movement so as to bring forward the day of Irish freedom.
A commemoration will be held next Sunday, July 12th in County Longford in remembrance of Óglach Martin Hurson and the other 9 1981 Hunger Strikers.

The Republican Movement held the annual Wolfe Tone Commemoration on Sunday 14th June.
The commemoration was attended by young and old alike. Among those present, one attendee marked her 82nd year at Bodenstown, having attended every year since the age of six, while another marked her 55th, having first attended in 1971. For many, it was their first time, and we hope to welcome them back again next year along with more first timers and others who may not have attended in recent years.
The commemoration was chaired by Uachtarán Sinn Féin Poblachtach Seosamh Ó Maoileoin. A wreath was laid by Seán Whitson (Dublin) on behalf of the Republican Movement.
Liam Ó Culbáird spoke on behalf of the National Graves Association. Liam gave a great speech and highlighted the enormous amount of work carried out by the NGA across the country, all on a voluntary basis and funded through donations and fundraising as the NGA do not accept any state funding.
The main oration was delivered by veteran Fermanagh Republican John Joe McCusker. A fantastic oration as usual from John Joe.
Special mention must go to the young piper whose playing was a highlight of the day and a reminder of the importance of carrying on our traditions. Well done also to the colour party and to all those who helped organise the commemoration.

Remembering with pride on the 13th anniversary of his death, Óglach Ruairí Ó Brádaigh, former Chief of Staff of the IRA & President of Sinn Féin Poblachtach.
2026 also marks 40 years since the 1986 Ard Fheis, where Ruairí stood firm in defence of the Revolutionary Republican Constitution and led the reorganisation of Sinn Féin, maintaining direct and unbroken continuity with the Sinn Féin founded in 1905. Upholding the sovereignty of the All-Ireland Republic proclaimed in 1916, he refused to accept the legitimisation of the British imposed partitionist parliament of Leinster House.
His speech that day was a warning to delegates that the Adams/McGuinness leadership would lead the movement down a road of treachery and away from the Irish Republic. Forty years on, with Provisional Sinn Féin implementing and supporting British rule in the occupied six counties, we are further from freedom than we were in 1986, every word he spoke has been proven right.

"I have no prouder boast than to say I am Irish and have been privileged to fight for the Irish people and for Ireland. If I have a duty I will perform it to the full with the unshakeable belief that we are a noble race and that chains and bonds have no part in us"
