Melbourne is participating in the 100 Resilient Cities @100ResCities challenge. Tweets by the #ResilientMelb project team (hosted by @cityofmelbourne).
@YungEnChee1@HollyKirk Hi Yung - in short, yes! There are several projects within the implementation plan that address WSUD, aligning with metropolitan IWM objectives and exploring water demands, in a changing climate, if we are to meet the Living Melbourne canopy targets.

Be part of #LivingMelbourne! Call your council, Parks Victoria or Melbourne Water & find out what programs they have that you can participate in, to help ensure that our thriving communities are resilient, connected through nature #SCBMelb20@ResilientMelb#urbanforest
@kyliesoanes Hi Kylie - protecting and increasing urban greening on private land is a key element of the strategy. There is work being undertaken to consider how to use regulations to increase urban greening in backyards
@HumphreyJE_ @HollyKirk@BirdlifeOz Hi Jacinta, I'm sure that something can be arranged with TNC who undertook the modelling. check out the the Living Melbourne Technical document which provides teh basis of the modelling
@HollyKirk The LiDAR is from Vic Gov. It was made available to all endorsing authorities. Not open source at this stage. DELWP have a very good dataset also.
@HollyKirk Holly - we have a three year implementation plan that is underway. It is a plan to 2050 but we need to really get plants to increase our canopy cover in the ground in the next 10-15yrs

41 organisations have endorsed Living Melbourne! Endorsement means organisations support Living Melbourne’s Vision, Goals & Actions & commit to work in partnership with the other endorsing organisations towards its implementation #SCBMelb20@ResilientMelb#urbanforest

The result of this process & strong evidence-base is an agreed metropolitan vision, goals & actions. The goals, to protect human health, nurture abundant nature & strengthen natural infrastructure are supported by 20 actions across 6 action areas #SCBMelb20#urbanforest

Co-design & collaboration is a crucial ongoing element. Workshops were held with local gov, land managers & policy makers. Extensive stakeholder consultation included the analysis & consideration of input from formal feedback on two major strategy drafts #SCBMelb20

Using the vegetation mapping & Birdlife Australia survey data, the likelihood of the presence or absence of selected bird species was mapped. This provides examples of how, at a regional scale, opportunities for connecting habitat might be identified #SCBMelb20

The urban heat island of metro #Melbourne, the presence or absence of vegetation & several indicators of socio-economic vulnerability (e.g household income, age, rentals) were analysed. Unsurprisingly, there is a close +ve correlation between these datasets #SCBMelb20

In a world first, in collaboration with @ResilientMelb partners @DigitalGlobe & @Trimble multispectral satellite imagery & LiDAR were used to map the height and distribution of vegetation across metro #Melbourne. This helps inform future planting opportunities #SCBMelb20

#Melbourne is rapidly growing and densifying, with its population currently at five million & projected to grow to 9 million by 2051. Urbanisation can cause the loss of permeable surfaces, canopy cover, vegetation & habitats

#SCBMelb20 It's a pleasure to introduce our 2nd Plenary Tweeter, Martin Hartigan, who will be telling us about the amazing Living Melbourne strategy from @ResilientMelb & @nature_org

#Melbourne’s #urbanforest includes the trees, shrubs, grasses, soil & water on public & private land. It reduces urban heat islands, cools our cities, provides biodiversity & habitat & helps improve physical & mental health during acute shocks such as #COVID19#SCBMelb20

#LivingMelbourne is an innovative approach to protecting & enhancing ecosystem services & biodiversity in cities. It was presented as an example of a successful strategy at the #WUF10 earlier this year by three global organisations @IUCN, @ICLEI and @TNC #SCBMelb20
