What you say: “having a daughter is what made me a feminist.”
What it means: “it took creating a woman with half my DNA in order to see her as a whole person.”
And if you think this SCOTUS ruling means states get to be “pro-life,” you’re gravely mistaken. If have ever been in a conservative religious space, you know this doesn’t protect the life of the one who gets pregnant (which is NEVER just a choice). It shames, devalues, & harms.
I’ve CHOSEN to not have children throughout my entire adult life. I’ve always been grateful for the fortunate circumstances (and people) that have supported my choice, though there have also always been plenty of obstacles, including but not limited to religious oppression.
This personal choice has just reached a level of privilege that is astounding and sad. This is about basic human rights for those who are already deemed second-class citizens - the ones alive right now who can barely manage to get pockets or promotions let alone equal wages.
I cannot caution you enough, Christian leaders in your 20s & 30s, or with more genuine love & concern, to be deeply merciful to people in word & in deed. Be very very slow to condemn, cancel & to claim what you’d never do. Especially publicly, You have hardly begun to be tested.
