Restoring the natural environment to parts of the RNGC property would improve the lifestyle for those in the surrounding neighborhoods, protect the natural environment in Reston, increase connectivity, improve access to trails and amenities, and maintain Bob Simonโs vision.
As a privately owned property, RNGC only serves 24 Restonians per day on average - golfers who pay to play. Is this serving the Reston community as a whole? We have a vision for this 168-acre property that could truly become a protected, permanent community-friendly open space.
On average, 160 people per day use the golf course. We envision that this property could be a place that can provide community-oriented public space for golfers and non-golfers; a space where there is something for everyone in Reston, regardless of age, income, or lifestyle.
Early findings from our studies show that open space and parks south of Sunrise Valley Drive are smaller than those north. We want to bring open space to this neighborhood and live up to Bob Simonโs vision.
A 2019 project by FCDOT collected pedestrian counts during peak hours at major intersections in and around Reston. The study identified 9 sites in North Reston that saw at least 100 pedestrians during peak hours, while South Reston had only 2 sites that reached 100 pedestrians.

Did you know that less than 15% of golfers paying to utilize Reston National Golf Course actually live in the community of Reston? We are exploring ways that this property can better serve our community. Follow along here: https://t.co/LJKuAIQSFr
The Reston National Golf Course is private property; neighbors canโt walk on the land, except for limited trails that cross it. We want to look at this property in a new light and envision ways that it can become a public space that improves our community and our environment.
Years of deferred investment has challenged the environment and infrastructure in neighborhoods surrounding Reston National Golf Course. Investing in these neighborhoods and creating connected communities will add value for every stakeholder.
The Reston National Neighborhood Study Group is committed to creating new permanent open space where it does not now exist, maintaining that any new development is adjacent to transit or existing infrastructure, and ensuring that any changes will benefit the entire neighborhood.
As population grows, pressure for affordable housing, access to amenities and open space, and demands for services will increase. How can we establish great amenities and protect public open space in Reston as our community evolves? Follow along here: https://t.co/LJKuAIQSFr
Change is happening in Reston. New transit hubs have generated large-scale development, driving population increases and job growth in Reston. We want to work with community members to create a place that will provide permanent, protected public space and benefit all of Reston.
