John Travolta reveals he owns 12 berets and explains the reasoning behind the look:
"I said, 'You're not an actor unless you're really a director. Why don't you dress like one?' I looked up, to affirm I was correct, all the old-school directors, and they all had berets and sometimes glasses. It was cliché in a wonderful way."
"Wamè" by Joseph Gaï Ramaka — Senegalese premiere.
Gorée Cinéma presents the Senegalese premiere of "Wamè," the most recent work by Joseph Gaï Ramaka, on May 22, 2026, at the Musée Historique de Gorée, on Gorée Island.
A 30-minute short film, the synopsis reads: From the coast of Gorée, director Arma Gòo boards the "Kumba Kastel" with a troupe of the island's storytellers, dancers, singers, actors, fire eaters, and acrobats, en route to the Cinecittà studios in Europe to shoot an epic musical. At sea, the ship picks up migrants adrift, and the lyrical crossing tips into a tragic dawn.
Ramaka is the filmmaker behind "Karmen Geï" (2001), the first African film adaptation of Bizet's "Carmen," which screened at the 54th Cannes Festival and Sundance and won Best Feature at the Pan African Film and Arts Festival in Los Angeles.
His earlier short "Ainsi soit-il" won the Silver Lion in the Corto Cortissimo section at Venice in 1997.
A 2024 Senegal–France–Morocco co-production, "Wamè" screened at the 48th Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival in February 2026.
The May 22 Senegalese premiere evening begins at 8:30pm with a musical performance by the choir of the Église Saint-Charles-Borromée de Gorée, followed by the open-air screening and a Q&A with the film team.
Produced by Yanis Gaye for Gorée Cinema — founded by Ramaka — and Strange Fruit Production House.
