By day she wrote cybersecurity advice for Forbes.

By night she helped her husband launder billions in stolen bitcoin.

A $500 Walmart gift card got them caught.

In August 2016, Ilya Lichtenstein broke into the crypto exchange Bitfinex.

He found a flaw in their security system.

Then he clicked withdraw more than 2,000 times.

119,754 bitcoin walked out the door, worth about $72 million at the time.

He deleted the access logs and sat on the coins.

For five years, nobody knew who he was.

His wife Heather Morgan wrote columns for Forbes on how to spot a cybercriminal.

She also rapped under the name Razzlekhan, called herself the Crocodile of Wall Street.

Together they laundered the stolen coins through darknet markets, mixers, and fake identities.

They bought gold. NFTs. And a $500 Walmart gift card.

That was the mistake.

They bought the card with stolen bitcoin and redeemed it in the Walmart iPhone app.

Under an account in Heather's real name.

In February 2022, federal agents raided their Manhattan apartment.

They found burner phones hidden inside hollowed-out books.

$40,000 in cash.

A laptop file labeled "passport_ideas."

The DOJ seized $3.6 billion in bitcoin, the largest financial seizure in US history at the time.

Ilya got five years, served 14 months. Heather got 18 months, served even less.

In October 2025, Heather posted a video from a bathtub thanking "Papa Trump" for her release.

The White House denied and said Trump had nothing to do with it. Both were out under a 2018 prison reform law.

The bitcoin they stole would be worth around $8 billion today.

And it all came down to a $500 Walmart gift card.
