When I pray for peace, I pray not only that the enemies of my country may cease to want war, but above all that my own country will cease to do the things that make war inevitable.
- Thomas Merton (1961)
Ash Wednesday is not a day to manufacture guilt. It’s a day to recognize our brokenness, frailty, and trust in God’s love.
It’s a day to freely come before God and declare, “I am human, I am dust, and I am loved.”

I was hungry, but you took free lunch out of schools.
I was thirsty, but you cut humanitarian aid funding for clean water.
I was a stranger, but you sent ICE agents into my church to arrest me.
I was sick, but you took away my healthcare coverage.
I was in prison, but you left me there because you profited off of it.
Whatever you did to the least of these, my siblings, you did to me.
(how I think Jesus would have phrased Matthew 25 if he was preaching in America today)
The Good Samaritan story is not just an example of compassionate spirituality. It is a critique against religious passivity.
If “church people” won't work for justice and mercy, God will find some other people who will.
It’s incredibly challenging when Christians on various sides think the other side is delusional, blind, trapped, etc.
How do we know who is being faithful to God?
The litmus test I believe is:
Cruciform love.
Living the Beatitudes.
The Sermon on the Mount.
That’s how we know.
Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.
Rejoice and be glad because great is your reward in heaven.

No matter how you vote, you are welcome in our church.
I just ask that you would commit to see politics thru Jesus & not Jesus thru your politics; that you would be curious about why your brothers & sisters see things differently. And that you would live humble, prayerful lives.
People want to help after a natural disaster, but some efforts and donations can actually be extremely unhelpful, adding to the burdens of already stressed people. Here are six things people should NOT do in responding to the recent hurricanes. https://t.co/FnY4DScTto
Jesus' harshest words were directed towards those who used their religion as a tool of oppression and self serving power.
Jesus' harshest words were directed towards religious hypocrisy.
Not the poor, the immigrant, or the unbeliever.
May we remember this.
