📣Petitioners Urge General Mills To Reject GMO Glufosinate-Resistant HB4 Wheat

23,000 consumers just petitioned General Mills to reject a new GMO wheat strain engineered to survive glufosinate, a pesticide the EU banned in 2018 over reproductive toxicity concerns.

Glufosinate is 166 times more chronically toxic than glyphosate, according to Friends of the Earth's own evaluation of EPA data. This wheat wouldn't hit the market for another five to seven years, but food companies are already being asked to commit to rejecting it before that door opens. Wheat is one of the last major US crops still largely free of GMO seed.

Most export markets reject GMO wheat outright, meaning a shift to this strain could hurt American wheat farmers financially, organic growers included, since contamination can spread from neighboring fields.

Poland is moving legislation that would fine practitioners of natural and holistic medicine up to one million Polish złoty. Roman Fritz, a member of the Polish Parliament, says the bill could pass, and he's watching colleagues behave like pharmaceutical sales representatives in the chamber debates.
