[NEWS] Kim Oujoon, a prominent and influential South Korean journalist & political commentator who has shaped liberal political discourse in South Korea says "#BTS's Grammy withdrawal will remain a landmark in world cultural history for a long time."
"The Grammys see themselves as the most prestigious music awards with no fan-voting or even commercial success criteria, and yet they created a side door, just like MTV. This was basically saying, "Asia, come in through the side door. Separate but equal. The same logic that has normalized racial segregation in America for the past century."
"When MTV did this 7 years ago, BTS still attended despite the controversy. And after criticism, MTV nominated them in main categories outside 'Best K-pop'. But this time, in 2026, BTS said enough is enough and declared to the American mainstream music industry, "We're not using the side door anymore." And they refused."
"An artist from outside of America boycotted the supposedly most prestigious award in music and declared, "You are out of step with the times."

Forbes on the Grammys' new “Best Asian Pop Music Performance” category:
— “Nobody created a ‘Best European Pop Music Performance’ category for Dua Lipa or Ed Sheeran.”
Kpop stans saying arirang is not "korean enough" because it has 3 english songs in it even though the 7 bts members are full koreans who born, raised and live in korea.
But according to them Bruno Mars, Olivia rodrigo are asians cause their great grandpa's aunt is asian.
BTS' "ARIRANG" becomes the FASTEST album in history to have all of its songs surpass 200 MILLION streams.
— Achieving it in just 132 days, 2x faster than any other album in history.
the whole "skz or bp winning a Grammy before BTS" agenda is so embarrassing 😭 do they hear themselves? they are so desperate for that gotcha moment they are setting their own faves up to look like the biggest clowns accepting an award BTS literally said "no thanks" to. lmaoooo
Ini baru real world impact.
Notice BTS didn't insult them. They basically said they're done because of the difference in value and that's that. Meanwhile members of the RA are crashing out, insulting them and their work, and calling critics and the public names on social media.
the fact that if you’re a latino artist singing in portuguese you can’t even submit to the latin categories 😭 this is why trying to categorize music by its language is just stupid as fuck
I don't think people fully understand the magnitude of this decision.
Some of the music industry's most respected producers, writers, engineers, and creatives worked on ARIRANG. A project built to the highest artistic standard. One producer even spoke publicly about hoping the album would receive Grammy recognition.
Then the Recording Academy introduced a category specifically for Asian pop.
And BTS chose not to submit.
Think about that. The biggest musical project of the year. One of the strongest commercial and artistic contenders. A project that could have competed across multiple major categories. It simply won't be in the race because the artists chose principle over prestige.
Moves like this don't happen often. When artists at BTS' level willingly walk away from the biggest stage in music, the conversation shifts because of what they refused to endorse.
Critic Lim on #BTS’s decision “The fact that a single Asian artist has rebelled against a massive awards ceremony and opened a forum for public discourse demanding change demonstrates immense influence in itself.”
They are the only asian artist that have the nerve to do that! 👏🔥

BTS announces they will not submit their music for the 2027 GRAMMY awards, following the Recording Academy’s addition of an Asian-focused category:
“I hope music itself can be heard and loved rather than being distinguished by region or language.”
