The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) today donated four cows to the Ubutwari Artists Group, led by Maria Yohani, in fulfilment of a pledge made by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen MK Mubarakh in recognition of the group's outstanding contribution to the success of the Ubutwari Concert.

The National Security Symposium is currently underway at the Rwanda Military Academy Gako, bringing together security leaders, academics, and key stakeholders for critical discussions on the themes: “External Interference in African Affairs: Challenges and the Way Forward; Natural Resources and Sustainable Development: Strategic Opportunities for Africa.”

The annual symposium is jointly organised by the RDF Command and Staff College in collaboration with the University of Rwanda. It aims to help senior command and staff course students deepen their understanding of contemporary security challenges facing Africa, while also enhancing their awareness and preparedness to respond to future complex security threats.

About @TheEconomist semi-annual profiling of Rwanda: calling President Kagame a “cynical master of power politics,” reveals more about the editorial’s unease with a forward-looking African leader/government than about Rwanda’s reality. When an African nation quadruples its per-capita income through focused delivery, citizen mobilization and smart partnerships, the Economist and like-minded commentators grasp at words like “dictator” and “hubris” rather than admit their old playbook is obsolete. The article’s moral panic over Kigali’s new airport and Formula One ambitions shows how African ambition is still policed by outdated expectations of poverty and deference, a.k.a. the bigotry of low expectations. Citing anonymous diplomats and that notorious NGO, the article sidelines African voices, as though local expertise is irrelevant in judging African achievement. Although the author does seem worried that President Kagame is “popular in Africa,” maybe a quiet acknowledgment that African approval threatens the gatekeepers of global opinion?

RWANDA REGRETS GERMANY’S POLITICIZATION OF DEVELOPMENT COOPERATION

The politicization of development cooperation by Germany’s caretaker government is wrong and counterproductive.
