Some in the Canadian media, a few members of parliament, and many on Twitter seem not to bother reading the excellent and FREE research on the Canadian economy that is readily available.

As a result, it makes for poor discussions about how screwed we are, how we got here (hint: it's not tariffs), and what, if anything, we can do to get out of it.

Carney’s Right Direction

My contentious view is that PM Mark Carney understands what must be done. The pace may not satisfy everyone, and it is slower than many Canadians would prefer, but the direction is right.

In a more volatile world, Canada’s economic sovereignty will depend on building out the assets that give us a durable competitive advantage: abundant energy, critical minerals, water and the infrastructure to bring them to market.

The Churchill Falls and Gull Island projects, alongside the Labrador Trough corridor, are a meaningful step forward. They connect major new clean-power capacity with world-class iron ore, graphite, mining, transmission, rail, and port infrastructure, supporting investment, high-paying jobs, and a more resilient industrial base.

Canada should treat its resource wealth not as a liability to manage, but as a strategic advantage to develop. Hopefully, this is the first of many such deals: cooperative federalism that advances energy abundance, faster project development, and greater economic independence.
