DCI summons Nyaribari Chache MP Zaheer Jhanda over Kisii convoy attack
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has summoned Nyaribari Chache Member of Parliament Zaheer Jhanda to assist with investigations into the attack on the Linda Mwananchi convoy in Kisii on Friday, July 3.
In a statement issued on Sunday, July 5, the National Police Service said the lawmaker had been directed to appear before the DCI offices in Kisii County to record a statement as detectives continue investigating the incident.
The police said the MP's statement would help establish the full circumstances surrounding the attacks.
The investigation follows an incident in which several vehicles travelling with the Linda Mwananchi team were reportedly stoned and damaged during a political tour.
The convoy was heading from Kisii to Keroka for a rally when it came under attack along the highway.
Videos shared widely on social media showed a group of young people throwing stones at the convoy.
Some individuals were also seen carrying weapons as they targeted the vehicles moving with the delegation.
Among those affected was former Chief Justice and 2027 presidential hopeful David Maraga, whose vehicle sustained significant damage during the incident.
As part of the ongoing investigations, detectives announced the arrest of four more suspects believed to have been involved in the attack.
This brings the total number of people arrested to seven after three suspects were taken into custody on Saturday. Police said the latest arrests followed an operation conducted by officers from Keumbu Police Station and DCI Kisii Central.
Following the incident, Linda Mwananchi leader Edwin Sifuna said he had reported the matter to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and asked the police to speed up investigations.
The Nairobi Senator also alleged that leaders from the Kisii region were behind the attack and called for all those found responsible to face the law.
The DCI said investigations are still ongoing and that detectives are continuing to pursue additional suspects believed to have taken part in the attack.
Mbadi hints at dual carriageway upgrade for Nairobi-Namanga road with toll stations
The government could soon turn its attention to upgrading the Nairobi-Namanga Highway, with Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi indicating that the road is among the infrastructure projects being considered for funding through the National Infrastructure Fund (NIF).
Speaking in Kisumu on Friday, Mbadi said money raised from the planned sale of government shares in one of Kenya's major telecommunications companies would not be used to support day-to-day government spending. Instead, the funds would be directed towards investment projects that can generate income and support economic growth.
The CS made the comments while responding to criticism from Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who is challenging the government's proposed partial sale of shares in the telecommunications company through the courts.
Mbadi defended the move, saying the government intends to invest the proceeds in projects that can provide long-term benefits and financial returns.
"We are not going to use for our budgetary consumption the money that we are getting from the divestiture of our state firms. We are investing that money, and it is going into the National Infrastructure Fund, which we are going to use for investments," Mbadi said.
He cited the Nairobi-Namanga road as one of the projects that could benefit from the fund.
According to Mbadi, the highway could be expanded into a dual carriageway and supported through toll stations where motorists would pay fees for using the road.
“We are going to use that money to finance public infrastructure that is commercially viable. If that money goes to the construction of terminals at JKIA, we will be able to see,” he added.
“If it goes to the expansion of the Nairobi-Namanga road, the road leading to the border of Tanzania and Kenya, we will see a dual carriageway, and we will see toll stations erected on those roads, where road users will pay some money to be able to contribute to the National Infrastructure Fund.”
However, Mbadi did not reveal when the project could begin, how much it would cost, or whether the entire corridor would be upgraded.
The Nairobi-Namanga route covers about 160 kilometres from Nairobi to the Kenya-Tanzania border, with the Athi River-Namanga section measuring roughly 136 kilometres.
He also noted that the National Infrastructure Fund will focus only on projects that can generate returns.
According to the CS, the process of appointing the fund's board has already been completed, and an official announcement is expected soon, allowing the fund to begin supporting key infrastructure investments across the country.
A police operation in Kimilili has led to the arrest of two suspects believed to be behind a mobile phone theft and hacking network.
