Can't say I disagree.
But two things i) attempted murder does not carry the same sentence as murder, neither does recklessness carry the same sentence as intent; ii) throwing a traffic cone in the direction of the police - whilst surely criminal and deserving of penalty - should not carry a 3-5 year jail sentence.
@jezzle9@NickRisdale@donmcgowan Quite. Notice a stark difference.
They were advised to plead 'not guilty'. Every white accused has been advised to plead 'guilty'.
@IanDiMaggio@freekeestylee Nah. All politicians across the political spectrum politicise events. Its nothing new.
I believe in the individual and their responsibility for their actions. I don't believe we are mindless servants of the political elite. That's far too easy and lazy.
I don't see it like that.
I see it as failed and at times deliberately provocative governance. When they govern unfairly, unjustly and set the dogs on a certain demographic and when that demographic's concerns are repeatedly ignored/ demonised or mocked for airing their concerns they will eventually react with anger.
Nothing justifies violence imo - other than self defense - but it can be explained.
@IanDiMaggio@freekeestylee And that outlook is absurd. As absurd as the lashing analogy I gave.
His sentence is set at 3-5 years. Mercy is required to shorten it. It shouldn't be required because the sentence SHOULD be shorter.
@IanDiMaggio@freekeestylee And by saying he won't serve that long its tantamount to the analogy I gave. That is his projected sentence. Unless he's shown mercy that will be his time in jail.
@freekeestylee I would expect no less from you. But let me tell you when the fascists come for you, I won't allow our political differences to color my response.
I agree. But rioting is not throwing a cone in the direction of the police.
The second part of your sentence is absurd.
'He's unlikely to receive all 200 lashes anyway - the doctor will probably stop it after 80 when he passes out or starts bleeding too much.'
You're tacitly admitting the punishment is excessively cruel and disproportionate but then treating that excess as irrelevant or even comforting, because the system might quietly moderate it in practice.
