To prepare for their young, the female enters a hollow tree cavity, and the pair seals the entrance shut using a mix of mud, droppings, and food pulp.
They leave only a tiny slit for the male to pass food through. The female essentially imprisons herself for weeks, sometimes months, relying entirely on her mate for survival. She then lays and incubates her eggs inside this sealed chamber while molting all her flight feathers, leaving her completely vulnerable and flightless.
The male’s job is an act of total devotion: he must forage and deliver every single meal to the female and their chicks through that tiny slit, often making hundreds of trips a day.
This dedication ensures protection from predators and the success of the next generation.
