And yet, the more the media of record focus their coverage on polarizing news the greater the increase of instability in society. The media are now reporting that this instabity is reaching a dangerous point. The puzzle: Do the media not see this? Are they not able to adjust?
Please explain this puzzle to me:
There can be a feedback loop where the media covers what it believes the audience wants, and the audience in turn responds to what is being covered, reinforcing the media's original belief.
Meanwhile, stories that might help voters understand the root causes of polarization and instability are often complex and multifaceted making them more challenging to cover in a compelling way.
