Our energy sector wasn’t the only one that suffered a lost decade. From General Eyre’s memoir:
“Our international standing and relevance were in freefall, and our members around the world reported being excluded from more meetings, including with Five Eyes partners. I shared these observations with a very senior public servant, who was quite candid in stating the government didn’t care.”

121 years ago today, Einstein mailed in arguably the most famous equation.
On September 27, 1905, a 26-year-old Swiss patent clerk with dark, curly hair – years before he grew that signature nest of white hair – dropped three handwritten pages in the mail. The paper arrived at the offices of Annalen der Physik, a German scientific journal. It had no university title attached.
But inside, an idea would forever change how we understand the universe:
E = mc²
Energy equals mass times the speed of light squared. That single equation revealed something astonishing – that mass and energy are not separate things. They are different forms of the same stuff. A tiny amount of matter can release an enormous amount of energy, because the speed of light squared is such a massive number.
This one insight explained how stars shine, how atoms split, how nuclear bombs work, and what happened in the first seconds after the Big Bang, when energy and matter were constantly trading places. Without E = mc², we wouldn’t understand modern cosmology, nuclear energy, or even the chemistry of stars.
Einstein would go on to publish four other groundbreaking papers that year – covering light, time, motion, and atoms. Physicists now call it his miracle year. But this one, mailed 120 years ago today, reshaped our understanding of reality itself.

Alberta has been fighting a war against rats for more than 75 years. When Norway rats reached Alberta’s eastern border in 1950 after spreading west across the Prairies, the province declared them a pest and launched an aggressive campaign to stop them from taking over.
At one point, Alberta treated 8,000 buildings on 2,700 farms with 63,600 kg of 73% arsenic trioxide tracking powder, blowing the poison underneath buildings so rats would walk through it. The chemical was eventually abandoned after livestock, poultry and pets were accidentally poisoned.
The province then built a 600-km-long Rat Control Zone along the Saskatchewan border, with inspectors checking properties and destroying infestations and rats on sight. More than 70 years later, Alberta still has no established breeding population of rats.
Rats occasionally hitchhike into the province on vehicles and shipments, but when they are found, they are isolated and eradicated. It is even illegal to own a pet rat in Alberta.

Labour Day
Labour Day (worldwide)
Labour Day (French: fête du Travail) is a statutory public holiday in Canada that occurs on the first Monday in September. It is one of several Labour Day celebrations that occur in countries around the world. The Canadian celebration of Labour Day occurs on the same day as Labor Day in the United States.
For me Labour Day is a good reminder that all work has value and all people have value.
Enjoy this day and celebrate in a way that you choose.

Prime Minister,
You said: “Any sharing of the toll revenue won't happen until all the debt, all of the debt, is repaid."
Yet we learned last night that you had signed a deal that gives the U.S. “50% of net bridge and crossing related revenues for the first 15 fiscal years of bridge operations.” Before debt repayment. Just profit sharing on a bridge 100% built with our tax dollars.
The opposite of what you said.
How do we trust anything else you say about dealing with the U.S.?
