I suspect American Catholicism's big problem is the Irish takeover in the 19th and 20th centuries - Irish Catholicism itself having been so negatively influenced by English Puritanism!

American Catholicism is largely just intellectual Catholicism. Heavily influenced by Protestant converts and the American Protestant culture they converted from. It’s why the videos of Holy Week in Spain get so much traction on this site. The American convert looks on and says look how beautiful Catholicism is while failing to produce our own unique Catholic culture. Im not knocking converts. Just making an observation. I think outfits like Catholic Answers are great for answering Protestant objections to Catholicism, but they’ve also created a Protestant ethos where Catholicism becomes something like faith alone plus the sacraments. It’s still mainly based on what you believe rather than how the faith is embodied. It’s quote mining certain scriptures to combat the quote mining of other scriptures. The closest thing we get to a genuine Catholic culture is at ethnic parishes that have a remnant preserved from their European heritage. A polish parish, or Italian parish will still do processions but there’s nothing that is unique to America. We should work towards changing this.

On 12 July 927, King Æthelstan united the English kingdoms, creating what is widely regarded as the birth of England as one nation.

Nearly 1,100 years later, England still has no officially recognised national birthday.
Perhaps it is time we changed that.

A nation with this much history, heritage and identity deserves a day to celebrate its story.

Today, 8th July, we remember St Withburga, an Anglo-Saxon princess of East Anglia who chose a life of prayer, humility and service over wealth and status.

She founded a Christian community at Dereham and, according to tradition, God miraculously provided for those in her care through two wild hinds, which came each day to provide milk for the builders. Because of this, St Withburga is often depicted with a deer.

Long before the Norman Conquest, England produced men and women of deep faith whose quiet lives helped lay the spiritual foundations of this nation.
