TRANS NZOIA’S DAIRY SECTOR CONTINUES TO GROW

Trans Nzoia County is home to over 72,000 dairy farmers and more than 180,000 dairy cows, producing over 500,000 litres of milk daily. This makes dairy farming one of the county’s key economic pillars and a major source of livelihood for thousands of families.

The county boasts 21 dairy cooperative societies that play a critical role in milk collection, processing, and marketing.

Through deliberate investments by the County Government under the leadership of H.E. Governor George Natembeya, the dairy sector continues to receive significant support aimed at increasing productivity and improving farmers’ incomes.

Two dairy cooperatives in Cherangany have benefited from a combined Kshs. 100 million investment for milk value addition equipment, while two other cooperatives received tractors to enhance their operational efficiency.

Koitogos Dairy Cooperative Society was also provided with a 10,000-litre milk tanker to strengthen milk collection and distribution.

Previously, the County Government supported seven dairy cooperatives with milk coolers, while the National Government complemented these efforts by providing an additional four coolers.

In 2024, the County Government submitted a proposal requesting 10 more milk coolers to meet the growing demand.

Today, we welcome the delivery of five additional milk coolers by the National Government through Principal Secretary Kilemi.

This is a clear demonstration of the positive results that can be achieved through collaboration between the County and National Governments.

The new milk coolers will improve milk quality, reduce post-harvest losses, increase collection capacity, and enable farmers to earn an additional Kshs. 2 per litre supplied.

Now some leaders, including the Senator and the Woman Representative, want to take credit for projects they had no role in implementing.

Agriculture is a devolved function under the Constitution, meaning its implementation is the responsibility of county governments.

On livestock health, the County Government has vaccinated over 104,000 cattle against Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and rehabilitated cattle dips across the county to strengthen disease control and protect farmers’ investments.

To address the challenge of livestock feeds, the County Government has established one-acre Juncao multiplication centres in every ward, with distribution of planting materials already underway to promote affordable and sustainable fodder production.

While these gains are encouraging, milk prices remain below the level needed to cushion farmers against the rising cost of living.

We therefore urge national leaders to support efforts aimed at ensuring dairy farmers receive the promised Kshs. 50 per litre, as many are currently selling milk at approximately Kshs. 43 per litre.

As a county government, we remain committed to investing in dairy infrastructure, disease control, quality feeds, value addition, and market access to ensure dairy farming remains profitable and sustainable for the people of Trans Nzoia County.
