It's not my dream either, but he has a right to it. I don't have a right to deny his right to it and neither do you.
Cold hearted? Well, he is on the autism spectrum which is notorious for relational issues. OTOH he pretty much solved the problem of lack of high speed internet in remote areas. SpaceX also provides hundreds if not thousands of construction and related jobs. Nuralink is helping the blind see and the crippled walk, and is only getting started developing that tech.

Lots of hardhats feeding their families, paying for their houses, and funding their retirements. Then there’s engineers, people making stainless steel, LOX, LCH4, truck drivers, etc.

Musk has a dream of establishing a self sustaining human civilization on Mars. You can’t do that with the chump change of a billion dollars. Every one of his companies aimed at one or another aspect of attaining that, and making a profit while developing the needed tech. He doesn’t take much of a salary. His wealth is in the value of those companies.
