For years, one of the biggest conversations in Nigeria’s renewable energy sector has been simple, “how do we move from isolated projects to sustainable scale?”
That is why the launch of the Green Finance and Investment Facility (GFIF) is so important.
The Rural Electrification Agency pioneered the GFIF as a long term financing platform designed to provide consistent, scalable, and sustainable funding for renewable energy projects across the country. More importantly, it represents a major shift away from fragmented project-by-project financing toward a structured institutional framework that gives developers more reliable access to capital over the long term.
This is exactly the kind of financial architecture the sector needs if we are serious about accelerating universal energy access.
What makes the GFIF particularly significant is the strength of the partnership behind it. From REA anchoring the project pipeline and Results Based Financing mechanisms, to Barton Heyman leading blended finance structuring, alongside First City Monument Bank, ARM-Harith Infrastructure Investment Limited, and developers under the World Bank supported DARES programme, this is a clear example of public and private sector collaboration working together toward a common goal.
The signing of the Programme Launch Declaration officially moves the GFIF from concept to implementation and that transition matters.
When fully operational, the GFIF Pilot is expected to provide reliable solar-powered electricity access to approximately 1.2 million Nigerians and support over 230,000 household connections across underserved and unserved communities.
Beyond the numbers, this is about creating a financing ecosystem capable of supporting renewable energy deployment at the scale Nigeria truly requires.
The work continues.
