One of the biggest reason for their popularity back in the day was the caliber compatibility with revolver sidearms. You only needed to carry one caliber to feed everything. But the lever made shooting prone difficult, that’s one of the reasons why bolt actions dominated military service instead of levers
Still, lever actions are just so satisfying to use.
