Our latest article: most of our clavulanate and cefovecin use in Aus dogs + cats is simply not justified by the microbiology. Vets, it’s time to bring back the old-school antibiotics that still work really well - amoxicillin and TMS. https://t.co/ensFi1CWKA @UniMelb@NCAS_Aus
@chrisnoonan54@KosSamaras@chrisnoonan54 clearly it hasn’t occurred to you that there are people out there who vote for reasons *other* than self-interest. That’s quite telling.
Hot off the press: more insights from our team’s veterinary antibiotic stewardship trial in 135 small animal clinics. Big congrats to first author Suzanna Richards! https://t.co/9LxhZVSaLB @ApcahUnimelb@NCAS_Aus@UniMelb
@ApcahUnimelb team on fire!! Another amazing presentation, this time from Ri Scarborough about the barriers vets face around electing NOT to prescribe antibiotics in practice

Seemingly irrational decisions make more sense when we understand the very real emotions that underpin them. My latest paper explains the fears that drive veterinarians to prescribe antibiotics in the absence of a clear indication: https://t.co/6CMj9L26Lk
@NCAS_Aus@ESCMID@UniMelb Anna and I were both very happy to be at ICOHAR. It is a small, high-quality ECCMID-adjacent conference (every 4 years) focused on OneHealth AMR issues. Highly recommend for those attending ECCMID 2027!
Prof Kas Thursky *just* visible here, opening the @NCAS_Aus symposium for World Antimicrobial Awareness Week #WAAW2022#AAW22. It’s great to see so many champions of animal and human antimicrobial stewardship, both in the room and online. Let’s tackle some wicked problems!
For Australian veterinarians who are looking for simple ways to improve their day-to-day antibiotic choices, here’s a chat I had recently with the lovely (and funny) guys from The Vet Vault! @vet_vault@ApcahUnimelb@NCAS_Aus#veterinarymedicine https://t.co/bsxTA5h4Uv
Vets at UniMelb are tackling antimicrobial resistance. Hear from me and colleagues about a huge vet AMS trial, simple changes microbiology labs can make to promote AMS & effective ways to talk to pet owners about responsible antibiotic use & more. #aaw2021 https://t.co/xYDAT3dda9
@NCAS_Aus@JRGilkerson @LauraHardefeldt @FVASunimelb @ApcahUnimelb Thank you to @NCAS_Aus for organising these seminars so that we can all learn from each other. There is so much to be gained by working together across multiple sectors on this OneHealth problem of AMR.
@lesleyhawes4 @LauraHardefeldt Thank you for tuning in @lesleyhawes4 ! For anyone who missed today’s session, the veterinary AMS talks are available on the NCAS website @NCAS_Aus
What’s the best way to decline to give a pet antibiotics, even when the owner really wants them? Our latest publication provides new insights and practical pointers for vets in their daily conversations. Happy AAW! https://t.co/VUgQzLFtUl @NCAS_Aus@ApcahUnimelb#aaw2021
@VicGovDH Some huge numbers of COVID tests performed in Victoria throughout the pandemic, but especially recently. Huge thanks to the laboratory staff and collection centre staff who are clearly *working their backsides off* to get it all done. Legends!
@NCAS_Aus@ApcahUnimelb @FVASunimelb @MDPIOpenAccess@TheDohertyInst@VicGovAg@CIDRAP_ASP@GlennFBrowning @LauraHardefeldt Thanks, Arjun. We were encouraged by the relatively high susceptibility results from these companion animal isolates. But that's no reason for complacency; veterinary antibiotic prescribing definitely can (and should be) improved. AMS is a OneHealth team effort!
Great news: most dog and cat urinary isolates in Australia are susceptible to guideline-recommended amoxicillin and TMS. Not so great news: Australian vets are almost never choosing those antibiotics to treat dogs and cats. We can do better.
