Education charity raising aspirations of young people in the UK & rural India. Founded in 2009 by @TeachFirst Ambassador and @awaawardsuk winner @sanjuthinks 💛
We are steadfast in our mission to address educational disadvantage in rural communities of West Bengal who are living below the poverty line. We are delighted to have launched a new curriculum for our 200 students, jam packed with innovative activities to raise literacy.
5 years ago on this day in 2020 the RISE School, like the rest of schools in India, was forced to close its doors in the wake of the devastating Covid-19 pandemic. Sadly our doors remained closed to face to face classes for two whole years.
Although we worked hard to provide online classes and a workbook delivery system to students without smartphones, it was a hugely challenging time for our students. 5 years on we know we have our work cut out to bridge the achievement gap created by this inexplicable disruption.
We have had a whopping start to 2025 here at the RISE school, launching a brand new Bengali curriculum for 200 students! Our doors are always open to new students from class 5-10 from rural communities in and around Krishnagar - come join us today 💛

RISE is 1️⃣5️⃣ today! Watch our team and the young people we work with share RISE’s vision for education in rural India. What do you think of our students’ ambitions for the future?
RISE is 1️⃣5️⃣ next week! This video takes us back to the challenge as Covid-19 struck, forcing us to close doors to the RISE school. We made a plea and our supporters helped us to keep going with online classes and a workbook delivery system for students without smart phones 💛
Our rural students have many barriers to learning - child labour, child marriage, lack of food, welfare issues, parents’ perceptions of education as first generation learners, monsoon rains - so when a student’s attendance is over 80% that is something to recognise & celebrate 💛
Sampa is the first member of her family to be able to read and write Bengali. With RISE’s support she stayed in education and went on to pass her Madhyamik (GCSE) exams.

2 weeks until RISE turns 1️⃣5️⃣! Taking a trip down memory lane with this clip from a video for our 5th year anniversary…Sampa was one of the first students to complete our Bengali literacy programme called Yearn to Learn/শখার আকাঙ্ক্ষা and become literate 💛

So many success stories and beautiful relationships developed between mentors and mentees. We are so looking forward to the commencement of Module 2 on Career Awareness and Readiness and are so grateful to all the Bengali speaking mentors working with our students 🙏🏽
We loved our Lessons Learnt session with Purva & Aheli from @claylab_edu discussing the mentoring pilot programme for our rural students in Krishnagar which ran from April-June. It’s wonderful to see the impact that mentoring on Self Awareness has had for our Class 9 students 💛
We are so happy for our 46 students who passed their Madhyamik (GSCE) and Higher Secondary (A Level) exams this year. We held a celebration event on the weekend where Krishnagar local supporter Dr Jatan Roy Chowdhury presented certificates to each of the students 💛
