I don’t understand how the folks who have climate / enviro justice positions at these big orgs view moving on as acceptable. Right now is a great time to listen and assess what went wrong. It is the most important time. How else can we organize together and be in solidarity?

It is *incredibly* important to hear critiques. If there is anything we should have learned about justice-centered work in the past years, it is that creating space for criticism, hearing from folks on the ground, and listening / organizing with should be at the forefront.

@GlobalEcoGuy It would be fascinating to define what the potential solution options are that best prioritize EJ, dealing with over-extraction, and emissions reductions. It seems like it could be a powerful and actionable analysis. Maybe a lot to learn here from the biodiversity crisis lit too.

@wlawren90 I agree, and think a better statement would be that this bill doesn’t do anything for the existing power relations btwn communities on the frontlines and a more privileged class of climate activists. Arguably, it makes it worse and drives a wedge between them.

@JacquelynGill to just be cheery about this. There are some funds for communities in the bill (in theory), but this will push extractivism further on to many communities. It reduces emissions in a colonial way. I can’t stomach celebrating that, even though I’m a climate scholar and organizer.

@JacquelynGill I can’t speak to why other folks aren’t celebrating, but I’m not because this is a deal with the devil. When you know folks struggling against Mountain Valley Pipeline, which is likely greenlit as part of this deal, or against lithium extraction on Native land, it’s hard 1/2

@leahstokes Thanks for sharing this ! I was curious how “community” is defined at the federal level. Are these grants for cities, townships, etc? Or are these grants for community-based organizations ? Or both? Appreciate your breakdown of the bill.

@prisonculture They do suck! If we can imagine every step from start to finish, we probably aren’t being creative enough about what/how we imagine ! Because what we can immediately imagine from start to finish is often through existing institutions and systems.
