@catherine_zq@statsowar This is relative of course..
Among all offside calls overturned by VAR, there is at least a material subset that the majority of people “agree” with
The point is it’s a really tough argument to make that those are fine but the margins (however defined) should be ignored
@themmakingz@TheAlphaRock1@TheConnorPils McDaniels is averaging 8ppg/1.6apg/0.5rpg more than as a rookie, very close to Edwards’s improvement!
Hasn’t McDaniels drastically improved in the nba? Isn’t that your whole point? But let’s attribute the Wolves’s success to just Edwards! And ignore Randle & Gobert! Okay man…
@themmakingz@TheAlphaRock1@TheConnorPils In part because Edwards has gotten better for sure!
I’m sure it also has a lot to do with having a much better supporting cast. Gobert (11 & 12 w/ the best FG% in the league), Randle (21/7/5)
I don’t think you appreciate how big of a difference missing MM to winning it all is
@themmakingz@TheAlphaRock1@TheConnorPils And to be clear I’m not suggesting 9ppg would be his improvement in his college stats per game. It’s just an order of magnitude approximation for how much he’s improved. Materially for sure! Enough to be THAT big of a difference? No…
@themmakingz@TheAlphaRock1@TheConnorPils Edwards - great example!
Averages 9ppg, 0.3rpg, and 0.8apg more now tha as a rookie. Improved for sure, but only 9ppg worth
Guess what - played in college. And his team couldn’t even make it to March Madness! Is 9ppg improvement enough to get them there? Probably. Win it? C’mon
@themmakingz@TheAlphaRock1@TheConnorPils The contradiction:
1. Zion at 25 (now) is averaging less ppg, less rpg, 1.2 more apg , on 1.7% better shooting, with a worse PER than as a rookie
2. It’s illogical to say Zion is statistically worse, but would somehow perform better now against cbb than he would as a rookie
@themmakingz@TheAlphaRock1@TheConnorPils I’m saying Siena v Duke isn’t representative of the typical 16 v 1 game (sample size of 1)
You’re saying Flagg and Zion’s first month averages (sample size of a month, each) aren’t representative of… what exactly?
These two things aren’t at all alike
@themmakingz@TheAlphaRock1@TheConnorPils If this is true how can you possibly explain the fact that Flagg and Zion averaged 17.8ppg and 25.7 ppg, respectively, in their first full months in the NBA?
Genuine question, how is that possible?
@themmakingz@TheAlphaRock1@TheConnorPils I’d take you somewhat seriously if you were arguing honestly
Is Duke v Siena representative of the typical 1 v 16 matchup? Obviously not
Even if it was, you contradict your own argument.. those same Duke guys will play in the NBA next year who you purport to be so much better!
@themmakingz@TheAlphaRock1@TheConnorPils Yeah I’ll take things that didn’t happen for 200, Alex!
There’s a 0% chance your buddy was ever as good as Flagg/Zion when they played at Duke. So trying to use a guy, who’s materially worse than ppl who have actually played in MM and dominated NBA recently, does nothing
@themmakingz@TheAlphaRock1@TheConnorPils You still haven’t ONCE acknowledged how different playing with 4 Duke teammates vs 4 Norfolk State teammates is, either
You aren’t even arguing honestly here
Your entire argument is ‘I’ve seen it firsthand’ as if watching college and the nba is some prized commodity
@themmakingz@TheAlphaRock1@TheConnorPils Are you expecting me to be persuaded because themmakingz tells me he’s played cbb & watched nba players practice?
You haven’t pointed to a single tangible metric/stat to support your argument!
Literally just… “They’d kill them! I’ve watched them play! It’s so different!”
@themmakingz@TheAlphaRock1@TheConnorPils You consistently misrepresent the significance of NBA stats, too:
1. I’m using rookie season nba stats (the first full month) as a proxy for how good a college player would be in the nba (while in college)
2. Using subsequent years to measure how much a player has improved
@themmakingz@TheAlphaRock1@TheConnorPils I’ll first point out that you refuted neither of my points
And second I have acknowledged that players get better. You just overstate the effect. Statistics show this, I’ve given you multiple examples. And I’ll continue to trust the numbers over your gut-feel anecdotes
@themmakingz@TheAlphaRock1@TheConnorPils 1. There is no definition of what ‘best’ or ‘top’ means, so yes actually, it is very subjective. Same reason MVP is a debate
2. Your direction of causality is incorrect. If you can’t understand why being an AS doesn’t necessitate being a top 30 player, try asking Claude!
