India Finds Oldest Evidence Of Life On Earth?
A 3.5bn-year-old rock found in Jharkhand’s Singhbhum region has yielded chemical signatures that scientists say point to ancient microbial life - potentially the oldest directly dated evidence of life ever documented on Earth.
The rock contains tiny black bands interpreted as fossilised microbial mats, with analysis suggesting the organisms were already converting carbon dioxide into organic matter billions of years ago.
The study, led by scientists from the Geological Survey of India and collaborators, was published in PNAS. The rock was dated to 3.497bn years old, making the direct dating a key part of the claim.
The finding could add to evidence that life emerged on Earth much earlier than previously established, potentially in underwater volcanic environments.
