Vingegaards præstation bagefter kender vi. https://t.co/jANiHeFvBd
@AlexVanopslagh Nemlig!
Jonas Vingegaard and Michael Valgren both come from this small part of 🇩🇰 Denmark called Thy.
If Thy was a country, it would currently rank as the 10th greatest cycling nation in the world based on points earned by active riders. 👀
🇦🇺 9. Australia
🇩🇰 10. Thy 👏
🇩🇪 11. Germany
A first ever Grand Tour stage win for Michael Valgren, who must have thought many times over many years that his career could be over.
In 2022, he fractured his pelvis and ruptured his MCL & ACL in a crash at the Route d'Occitanie. The doctors that treated him didn't know if he'd ride a bike again.
For his comeback to have taken so long, to have ridden for the development team as he made his return, must make today, and his victories this season, taste SO sweet.
Couldn't be more pleased for him - such a gent as well.
Mathias Vacek: “I want to win one of the spring classics, I dedicate to it everything.”
The current Czech champion gave a great interview this morning with many interesting quotes so here they are:
“For this season, after consulting with my coach, I changed my strategy. In later years, I was in top form already in February. Still, this year I decided to start easier and focus on being in top form at the beginning of March, not holding it for too long or pushing my body to the limit and under pressure for several weeks. The main thing is to avoid fatigue.”
After the end of the season holidays, I was in Spain with my brother Karel from the end of November. I didn't travel anywhere. I focused only on training. I didn't miss a single prescribed training session, which would be impossible in the Czech Republic due to the climatic conditions. I'm concentrating on not making unnecessary mistakes. It will subsequently deprive you of a piece of the season. And I don't want to blame myself for anything. I spent Christmas and New Year's differently from five years ago. On Christmas Eve, I rode for five hours, the first day of the year six. I had dinner, and my brother and I had a toast. I want to move up to the very top. I commit everything to that.”
Of course, I discuss everything and consult with the coach. But if I have twenty-eight hours of training a week on my schedule, I'll go for it. If it's thirty, then thirty. I want to find my limits. I'm not going to ask myself what-ifs. I have my fate in my hands. My career. This year and next year are crucial. So I'm going to squeeze out what I have. If I do everything perfectly, I'll be great. There's nothing to wait for.”
“I don’t focus on the exact one race like Roubaix or whatever. I am focusing on all of the spring classics. I already won smaller races, now I want a big victory.”
“The Tour de France was and is a big goal. For everyone. I believed that the team would nominate me. Also because the cooperation with Mads Pedersen works. Together we can win more types of stages than our teammate Jonathan Milan. He is a pure sprinter, Mads Pedersen can win harder stages, and he can climb a hill if it is ahead of the sprint finish. The team knows this of course. We will definitely ride for the green jersey. I will be his right hand. And if Juan Ayuso starts, I will also ride as his domestique. The pressure will be big. But I am looking forward to it.”
