Leader of the Opposition in State Assembly Umang Singhar says, “The Chief Minister does not want a discussion in the Assembly on the issues affecting the students of the state. Two students have lost their lives, yet the Speaker is citing procedural rules. Whenever the government wants to pass a Bill, these rules do not seem to matter. But when the Opposition wants to raise issues concerning farmers, students, youth, or other public concerns, the government suddenly invokes the rules. This is a clear example of how democratic functioning is being undermined. Lakhs of students in the state are distressed. There have been irregularities in several examinations, including NEET... Protest against Ken-Betwa project in Chhatarpur ends abruptly as police clear site.

The protest, mainly by tribal women, was held for the last fortnight on the banks of the Barana river near Kupi village in Chhatarpur district.

Protesters had also launched 'jal satyagraha', 'chita (funeral pyre) satyagraha' and a symbolic 'faansi satyagraha'.

They are alleging inadequate rehabilitation and displacement-related grievances.

The agitation was led by Amit Bhatnagar, who staged an indefinite fast for 11 days.

“A team of doctors has just arrived; I will be declared unwell, and then they will forcibly take me away.

This is simply the kind of oppression being used to cover up the corruption?

After all, I had announced yesterday that I would expose their corruption.

That is why I am being arrested under the pretext of a medical issue; it is the same old story.”

The Ken-Betwa Link Project, the country's first river interlinking project under the National Perspective Plan, seeks to transfer surplus water from the Ken river to the Betwa river to provide irrigation and drinking water in the drought-prone Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

ASP Chhatarpur Aditya Patle says, "A team of doctors came here along with the police and the administration so that they could conduct a basic medical check-up.... The women who were present here were also peacefully seated in buses and dropped back to their homes because this is an under-construction bridge, and due to the rains, the river's water level has risen. Therefore, the area was not considered safe, so they were moved from the site."
