Dear supermarkets, a plea for integrity…
We’ve written to the CEOs of the Big Six supermarkets @Tesco@sainsburys@asda@Morrisons@AldiUK & @LidlGB asking them to be honest about where their food comes from & #stopfarmwashing

@SteveO726332 Around 70% of our fruit&veg is UK grown. We prioritise UK produce, then European, before looking further afield for a handful of things (bananas, ginger etc). We’ve never said we don’t import. And we have plenty of detailed info on our website about our sourcing&sustainability.
Has your veg travelled further than you this summer? ☀️ ✈️
Loads of harvests are at their peak in the UK now - so why don’t our supermarket shelves reflect that? Imports are really important, but when it’s in season here, now, it should be on our shelves.

@SteveO726332 We’re obviously having a bit of fun with this video. But in seriousness, it’s madness to be flying in things like onions and green beans when they’re at their peak season here and now. We’re not saying never import. We’re saying prioritise sourcing as locally as possible.
@SteveO726332 Huh? We literally say imports are important 😂 and they are. They make up around 30% of our fruit&veg year round. But in our opinion, UK produce should be prioritised when it’s in season. To fly stuff in from halfway around the world when it’s ready here is a disaster.
@SteveO726332 Imports are really important - but when the produce is in our fields, we think it should be on our shelves too. We always prioritise UK produce, then European. When green beans are coming in from Kenya, when they’re at their seasonal peak here, somethings wrong.
It’s #farm24 today. A chance to get a glimpse of farms around the UK for 24 hrs, and celebrate the amazing work our farmers do. Here’s to our own amazing farm teams, who work out in all weathers, picking, planting, weeding and always managing a smile! @FarmersGuardian
