Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Cairo today for his first state visit to Egypt in 10 years, as the two countries deepen economic and military ties.

Egypt has expanded cooperation with China in defense, ports, manufacturing and clean energy while seeking greater strategic independence from the U.S.

Xi was welcomed by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who described China and Egypt as important partners in strengthening the Global South.

🇨🇳🇪🇬 Xi Jinping has arrived in Cairo for his first state visit to Egypt in 10 years, welcomed personally by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

The visit comes as Egypt expands cooperation with Beijing across defense, ports, manufacturing and clean energy. The two countries also held their second annual military exercises last month, including Chinese J-16 fighters operating alongside Egyptian Rafales.

Sisi says Egypt intends to maintain a policy of “strategic balance”, while describing China and Egypt as partners in strengthening the Global South.

Cairo isn’t replacing Washington with Beijing. It increasingly wants the freedom to work with both.

🇺🇸🇷🇺🇪🇺 Russia is back at the G20 table in the U.S., and Europe isn’t exactly thrilled about it...

Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov joined the U.S.-hosted G20 talks in Asheville, NC and even met one-on-one with Treasury Sec. Bessent.

Trump defended bringing Russia back, saying, “We like getting along with everybody.”

But Bessent apparently gave Moscow a pretty clear message, too: no economic relief until the war in Ukraine ends.

European officials were still pissed. Germany’s finance minister refused to take part in the group photo if Russia was included, and other Europeans backed him.

So the photo was taken WITHOUT the Russian delegation.

Russia may be back in the room, but Europe clearly isn’t ready to smile for the camera with them.

The #MakkahDefenseAlliance is no longer just a declaration.

On 7 August 2026, in #Makkah, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan signed a joint defense agreement: An armed attack on one is to be treated as an attack on all. That is the same logic as NATO’s Article 5 — collective deterrence, not a war of choice.

Yesterday in #Istanbul, the first meeting of the Strategic Political and Defence Committee turned that pledge into actual institutions.

Here's what has been decided:

• Official name: Makkah Defense Alliance
• Secretariat in Saudi Arabia!
• First secretary-general will be from Pakistan and serve a three-year term.
• Agenda: Interoperability, joint exercises, heavy emphasis on #counterterrorism and defense-industrial cooperation — meaning joint R&D and production.

That last point matters. The alliance is built on complementary strengths:

🇵🇰 Pakistan — the only #nuclear-armed Muslim state, a large battle-tested military, and decades of security cooperation with both Riyadh and Ankara. Its presence gives the pact strategic weight that no purely conventional grouping in the region has had.

🇹🇷 Türkiye — #NATO’s second-largest army and the defense-innovation engine of the Muslim world: drones, munitions, electronics, shipyards, and a growing space and missile ecosystem. Ankara’s industry is what can turn a political pact into real interoperability.

🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia — the political and financial center of the Islamic world, guardian of the Two Holy Mosques, and the natural home of the secretariat.

The three have said the pact is defensive, not aimed at any named country, and open to other states. That is already being tested.

Egypt has said it is studying membership “very seriously,” subject to its constitution and legal commitments. Turkish officials have publicly hoped Cairo will join at the next stage.

Bangladesh has spoken positively about considering an invitation and framed it as a matter among Muslim states. No accession has been announced.

Other names — Syria, Libya, Somalia, Jordan, Azerbaijan — remain largely speculation at this point. It's wise to treat them as that until the alliance publishes membership criteria.

What is happening now is the hard work: Standards, command coordination, industrial joint ventures, and a pathway for new members so expansion does not dilute the core.

Why this is forming now is not mysterious. The region has lived through missile and drone attacks on Gulf energy infrastructure, a wider Iran war, and growing doubt that any single outside power will underwrite local security forever. The three founders are not leaving existing alliances; they are filling a gap among themselves.

If the #MakkahAlliance works, it will not be because of slogans. It will be because weapons, training, and production lines start to move more easily among member states — and because new members are admitted on clear standards, not on headlines.

Three capitals have put their names on a collective-defense clause. Istanbul put a secretariat and a secretary-general on it. The next test is whether the door they opened stays a door — and whether the factories and staff colleges follow the communiqués.

🇷🇺 Putin wants a new SCO bank that Washington can't touch.

The SCO is the China and Russia-led group spanning India, Pakistan, Iran and much of Central Asia, pitched as a counterweight to the West.

Speaking to SCO leaders, he called for a Development Bank that would operate outside systems he says are increasingly being used as political weapons, an obvious reference to sanctions hitting members like Russia and Iran.

He also pointed to Russia’s trade with SCO countries, which topped $400 billion last year.

A sanctions-proof bank for the countries most in the crosshairs of sanctions.
