Road engineering goes beyond construction.
On 28 October, our UIPE–IEK delegation visited @KURAroads, @KURAroads and the MOJA Expressway Operations Control Centre in Nairobi.
We explored Intelligent Transport Systems, adaptive traffic signals, automated enforcement, smart weighbridges, Weigh-in-Motion technology and expressway operations.
My key lesson: infrastructure must be designed, constructed, operated, monitored and protected throughout its service life.
Valuable lessons to reflect on as Uganda develops its transport network.
Grateful to the host institutions, @UIPE_Uganda and @TheIEK . 🇺🇬🇰🇪

UIPE–IEK KENYA ENGINEERING EXCURSION 2026 | PORT OF MOMBASA
On 27 October 2026, I had the opportunity to visit the Port of Mombasa as part of the engineering delegation from Uganda.
We were received by the Kenya Ports Authority (@Kenya_Ports ), whose engineers took us through the port’s operations, infrastructure development and ongoing expansion works, with particular attention to the Berth 19B project.
One of my key learning experiences was understanding how port infrastructure goes beyond the construction of berths and terminals. It involves the integration of marine engineering, dredging, quay structures, ground improvement, cargo-handling equipment, access roads, drainage, electrical systems and operational control systems.
For Uganda, as a landlocked country, the efficiency of the Port of Mombasa has direct implications for international trade, cargo movement and the competitiveness of our regional transport corridors.
The visit reinforced my appreciation of the importance of integrated infrastructure planning and cross-border cooperation in supporting economic development.
My sincere appreciation to the Kenya Ports Authority engineers for sharing their knowledge, and to the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE) and the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) for making this professional learning experience possible.
Learning Beyond Borders. Engineering for Development.
