Wrote 'The Jews of Key West' (FL Bk Award); run @KeyWestLiterary; tryna @ProtectKeyWest. Publisher, poet, husband, dad. 'The geography leans in / on me.'
In these pages, you'll find @rlopolis on the little-known history of the Jewish cell of the Cuban Revolutionary Party, @monilaurasimone on the plant wisdom connecting the region's Indigenous and diaspora communities, @m_myglory on the Third World Feminist School, and much more.
“This has been a well-known problem for a really long time, that #cruise ships 🚢caused these dramatic spikes in turbidity and deterioration in water quality,” said (Arlo) Haskell/ @rlopolis of Safer Cleaner Ships / @ProtectKeyWest.
“The people of South Florida that care about protecting corals deserve an explanation from DEP / @FLDEPNews about why they've abandoned this recommendation that they put forward not very long ago.”
"Despite five requests since Aug. 20, DEP officials did not respond to emails or questions. In response to an email Wednesday, a spokeswoman said she was looking into the matter, but had not responded by deadline."🤐☹️
ICYMI: "The people of South Florida that care about protecting corals deserve an explanation," said @rlopolis w @ProtectKeyWest. I asked @FLDEPNews five times for an explanation between Aug. 20 and Sept. 4.
An early draft of my book The Jews of Key West had an entire chapter about the Markovitz/Marks family —emblematic in so many ways of the Jewish immigrant experience. It didn't make the final edit but I still dream of Maxie on the mound at Trumbo Field. https://t.co/JY73XIhquk
One of the great athletes of his day, Maxie Marks ran a 10-sec 100-yd dash & the fastest 220 in KW; lettered in basketball at Stetson; pitched 25 games in '29 for Anniston Nobles in the Georgia-Alabama League. After his arm blew out, sold sporting goods next to the San Carlos.
June 7, 1923 – The local Key West Regulars baseball team defeated the visiting Havana Police Department crew 5 to 3. Will Daughtry and “Midget” Sevilla were the outstanding players.
“If you lived in Key West when Maxie was here & did not get to know him you definitely missed something. He was good medicine for a depressed person. He had that ability to make one laugh.”
Write the Florida Cabinet & ask them to DENY the Pier B Cruiseport expansion, which would bring bigger cruise ships to Key West. Details & click-and-send cabinet letter in our latest newsletter here: https://t.co/WLVfABd4DI
There’s no good reason to expand the Pier B cruiseport without an environmental impact assessment.
Someone has to step up and lead.
The Cabinet, respectfully, should deny this request to expand the cruiseport lease.
@WiltonSimpson@JimmyPatronis help us protect what’s left.
#Florida@GovRonDeSantis already overrode a popular vote against Key West cruise ships after receiving a campaign contribution from the pier operator -- now this. He works for his donors, not the people.
On Tuesday, Florida @GovRonDeSantis and elected Cabinet officers @JimmyPatronis@AshleyMoodyFL & @WiltonSimpson will vote on a recommendation by @FLDEPNews to authorize larger cruise ships at Key West’s Pier B Cruiseport, seen below, and extend the lease for 25 years.
Help @KeyWestLiterary to fully restore Elizabeth Bishop's 19th-century eyebrow house. ➡️https://t.co/bjhAipqkWA⬅️
"Florida Deserta" shows her poetic intrigue in Key West's architecture; the island's tin-shingled roofs are the scales of tarpon rolling beneath the water.
Ok people let's start a thread of great writers' and thinkers' bathtubs. I'll see your Darwin and raise you an Elizabeth Bishop, before @KeyWestLiterary restored and refinished it. Who's next?
Here's a look at our conceptual design for the Elizabeth Bishop Garden at 624 White Street in Key West, where the beloved poet lived in the 1930s & 1940s while working on her landmark debut collection, North & South:
It was a waking dream to be given a tour of Elizabeth Bishop's house. Her poetry informed the poet I was becoming & has had a lasting impact on my heart & creative spirit. Grateful to Arlo Haskell & all the folks at the @KeyWestLiterary for a wonderful start to 2024.
A federal judge in Maine handed down a major victory last week in the US fight against large cruise ships. Read more in our latest newsletter here👇https://t.co/zlsxeCCjwx
If you love books and what they're built from, especially typefaces and paper and the inks that marry them, working with Seth, Roy, Brian, and the whole @toposgraphics crew is a dream. Loving this case study of our work together.
For 5 years now, @toposgraphics has been designing us the most beautiful books any lit fest has ever seen. One even took home a top-50 prize from @AIGAdesign. Now they've honored us with this case study of the work: https://t.co/54FQltz7mZ
