Quantifying exposure biases in early instrumental land surface air temperature observations

Very detailed work by Emily Wallis et al. to analyse potential biases in different types of method for measuring temperatures in the 19th century.

The London, Paris and De Bilt sub-daily pressure series

Dedicated work by Richard Cornes to put together three multi-century sub-daily pressure observation series. Will enable a long-term storminess index to be calculated based on pressure triangles.

Join other volunteers on the latest #WeatherRescue project to transcribe and recover weather observations taken in Oxford in the 1830s-1850s.

The Oxford Radcliffe Observatory is the longest continuously running weather station in the UK with daily observations back to 1814.
The temperature and rainfall data has already been digitised, but the pressure observations have never been transcribed.
We aim to change that.

300,000 sheets containing 100M daily rainfall observations from across the UK between 1871-1962 are in @metoffice archives but need scanning & the values transcribing.
These data would transform our understanding of changes to extreme UK rainfall.
We need £100k & help from AI.

Walking part of South West coast path today and tickled to find Noss Mayo has a public barometer on display. Still very tricky to forecast exactly when and where sea fret will burn off, but @metoffice app did a pretty good job yesterday and today

It was the wettest July on record for the Republic of Ireland & Northern Ireland.
The difference?
For Northern Ireland, the records start in 1836. For the Republic of Ireland, they only start in 1940.
Why?
16,000 volunteers in the #RainfallRescue project!

Changes in rainfall are also very striking - the UK has got significantly wetter over the last 187 years in all seasons except summer.

We know this thanks to the latest data from the #RainfallRescue project, put together by citizen scientists.
