Proposed Rulemaking for NSAID Administration in Thoroughbred Racing; The purpose of this rule is to further limit the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and adopt stricter thresholds for the two most commonly used NSAIDs, flunixin and phenylbutazone.
This rule is intended to further safeguard horse health by reduce incentive of a trainer to enter an unsound horse. The rule also formalizes the use of a lameness scale used since 1999 by the American Association of Equine Practitioners. The rule is approved 5-0
