BREAKING: REAL LEADER! Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney unleashes a defiant message as his crushing tariffs against Trump take effect: "This is about who we are as Canadians."

The White House is not going to win this trade war...

"By now, you've likely heard something about the collapse of our trade talks with the United States. And you've probably heard that we could not accept what they were proposing," Carney said in a video posted to social media and YouTube. "Let's be clear, it's a shame."

"Because a mutually beneficial trade agreement between Canada and the United States is possible. One that respects our sovereignty. One that builds on our complementary strengths," he continued. "One that lowers costs for families on both sides of the border. One that creates good jobs for our workers. Canada has always worked towards these goals, even while America's attention and dedication to them has wavered."

As of today, Carney's new tariffs on roughly $20 billion in U.S. imports have gone into effect. They apply to a vast range of items ranging from clothing and food to metal parts and will devastate a U.S. populace already struggling with the economic fallout from Trump's disastrous Iran War. Americans are suffering and Trump just keeps heaping on more abuse.

And Trump is fully to blame here. He picked a trade war with Canada because they refused to bow to his neo-imperialist demands and because he wanted to distract from his other failures with a new scandal. This pointless, asinine showdown with our closest ally is also why he's attempting to rename Lake Ontario to "Lake America." Devoid of substantive policies, he's falling back on cheap stunts and mindless aggression.

"Canada has consistently proposed long-term partnerships, while the US has too often demanded short-term transactions," said Carney. "At the 11th hour, they were still pursuing restrictions on our ability to protect and promote the French language and our culture. They wanted a say in our future trade agreements with other countries."

"And they were offering terms that would, over time, undermine some of the most important industries in our country, including automobiles, steel, and forest products. In short, they were asking far too much and offering far too little," said Carney. "We worked in good faith to reach a fair deal. But since a fair deal wasn't on the table, we made the right choice to walk away from a bad one."

"The most fundamental issue is that the cumulative US demands revealed that they wanted us to become even more reliant on them, not less. In too many areas, they wanted dependency, not a true economic partnership," he said.

"In the Spring of last year, I warned that America was trying to break us so they can own us and I promised that that would never, ever happen," said Carney. "Because just like in Macdonald's day, our future won't be decided in Washington but right across Canada."

John A. Macdonald, the first Prime Minister of Canada, helped forge a strong unified identity for his nascent country by supporting Canadian confederation. One of his most lasting legacies is that he vigorously resisted efforts by the United States to gobble up the entire continent.

"This is about who we are as Canadians. It's about our livelihoods and the country we leave to our kids. It's about making Canada strong and it's about the compassion that makes us who we really are," said Carney. "The truth is adversity only makes us stronger, it always has."

"We are maîtres chez nous," said Carney, which means "masters of our own house," a French language slogan of the Quebec Liberal Party.

"What we're doing is working and we're just getting started. Let's keep going. Thank you for your time, I know it's precious," he concluded.

If the Trump administration had even one clear-eyed official left at this point, they'd be able to step back and see that this trade war is doomed to fail. Canada holds the real leverage here. Yes, Trump's tariffs will hurt them in the short-term, but Carney knows that Republicans are heading for a walloping in the midterm elections. Their time is limited.

He also knows that this White House cannot be trusted. If he caves and gives in to Trump's demands, it'll just be a matter of time before he comes back with a slew of newer, even more punishing asks. If you give this mobster President an inch, he'll demand a mile.

On top of that, Canada has now realized that they must look elsewhere for the future. Trump has irreparably damaged the United States' relationship with our northern neighbor. Even if MAGA is swept out of power, Carney knows that we are just one bad election away from another lunatic leader. We cannot be trusted as a stable partner and so new alliances must be built abroad.
