#GillianAnderson could've played Margaret in #DisclosureDay; that film was right out of the X-Files as well as "The Fugitive" and "Close Encounters." What if WWIII was averted by such an event like it was depicted in the film??? TWO THUMBS UP! #StevenSpielberg#EmilyBlunt
Okay… here are my thoughts on Steven Spielberg’s DISCLOSURE DAY.
===MILD SPOILERS ENSUE=== (You’ve been warned.)
I really enjoyed this film, in the same way I enjoyed CLOSE ENCOUNTERS, not to mention most of THE X-FILES, and many other great examples of this genre. The simple fact is, Humanity’s race to the truth about UFOs against shadowy Government forces is almost always an enjoyable ride. As such, I think this is Spielberg’s best film in a while—his action is tense and gripping, the actors are all compelling (though most of their characters are only lightly explored). Kamiński’s cinematography is solid and Williams’ low-key score is an evocative mix of suspense, awe, and wonder.
But… virtually all of this ground has been well trod before by other film and TV storytellers, including Spielberg himself. Disclosure is right there in the title, and you will see it. What you will NOT see is even a moment of the aftermath. How does humanity react after the shock passes? What do the aliens want? What does Disclosure +1 day look like? Or +1 year? All of that’s left up to your imagination. So in the same way THE X-FILES never figured out what it all means, DISCLOSURE DAY punts as well. Which is a shame, because the film briefly touches upon a couple of interesting new ideas, including empathy as the superpower Humanity needs to survive the Great Filter, and the world’s religions (specifically Christianity) having room for a universe full of intelligent life.
In the end, the problem with Spielberg’s DISCLOSURE DAY is the same problem that would likely confront any actual “disclosure” event we might one day experience: The modern conspiracy and mythology around UFOs is so byzantine and organically grown—and we’ve all lived with it for so long now—that no payoff is ever going to be as compelling, believable, or satisfying as the build-up to get there. And whether we finally do see everything, or there’s just no THERE there, I don’t think it’ll matter all that much.
Some folks will believe everything with religious fervor. Others won’t believe it at all. (Proof: NASA just sent four astronauts around the Moon and there are still folks who think it was a deepfaked psyop.) Lots of people will make jokes about it—social media will fill up with memes. And unless every single person on Earth has their life personally and directly changed by aliens or alien technology, the modern world will collectively yawn and move on to the next cultural obsession.
But like I said… the ride is entertaining, and Spielberg remains in full command his craft. My grade: B

Tom Cruise reunited with his Spielberg co-stars Colin Farrell ("Minority Report") and Dakota Fanning ("War of the Worlds") for a #DisclosureDay screening.
“Nothing better than a summer Spielberg movie night in a packed theater with friends!” Cruise wrote on social media. “Steven thank you for all of the hours of joy that you have given us in the cinema!! It has been a great honor and pleasure to have worked with you and to call you my friend. Congratulations to my dear friend Emily and the entire group of artists that created this movie. You were superb. We all loved ‘Disclosure Day’!!”

45 years ago today, our favorite archaeologist set off on his first cinematic adventure. Raiders of the Lost Ark was only ILM's second project outside of the Star Wars saga, and our first collaboration with director Steven Spielberg. It's been many years since those early days, and even more miles!
Watch the film today on Disney+ !
SO EXCITED to share the 1st episode of “INSIDE THE RODDENBERRY ARCHIVE” I hosted, and what a joy to interview “STAR TREK” legends (and my dear friends) MIKE OKUDA & DENISE OKUDA about their earliest days on “THE NEXT GENERATION” — WATCH it HERE: https://t.co/FS3wUcI9I6
