Bereaved families eligible for Road Accident Fund (RAF).

South African authorities say the families of the 46 Botswana citizens who were involved in a horrific bus crash in Limpopo during Easter, are eligible for road accident claims.

Forty five people died when the bus they were travelling in plunged off the Mmamatlakala Bridge into a ravine, before bursting into flames. One person, an 8 year-old girl, Atlang Siako, survived the crash.

South Africa’s Road Accident Fund, RAF, provides cover for both South Africans and foreigners involved in accidents on South African roads.

The High Court in Pretoria has thrown out new rules directed at foreigners which was introduced for the Road Accident Fund (RAF).

The rule required foreigners to prove they were in the country legally at the time of their accidents before they could lodge a claim.

NDABANEWS: The high court in Pretoria has found the minister of transport and the Road Accident Fund (#RAF) overreached their powers by issuing a directive that excludes illegal foreigners involved in accidents from accessing the fund’s benefits.

That puts in legal doubt proposed amendments to the RAF Act.
